Playing The Faery Tale Adventure (Genesis)

Hi there!

Another Genesis one for Bob! :)

And again it is an EA game. And again it is kind of an RPG :)

Unlike Starflight, this wasn't from EA originally, but converted from an Amiga game created by a company called Microillusions. And while I'm clueless how they got their foot into the door, there's also a "New World Computing" logo displayed at the start. You know, of "Might & Magic" fame.

The game itself is the usual fantasy setting brave knight game, basically a cross between early Ultima and Zelda games. I remember how it was hyped as one of the first "real" Amiga games, creating a really big world. IIRC it was advertised as having over 17.000 "screens".

Well, my first impression is that most of them are empty space

There also isn't too much story to follow, so for the start I was just wandering around and killing things, improving the character. Then I got me a map and started visiting interesting looking places... (like the one shown above ;))

Greetings,

Manuel

I bought this game a few months ago and gave it a try...:D

Awful interface, especially considering that the game isn't that complicated. Couldn't handle the slow movement across the - yes - empty space. 17,000 screens and not enough to do in them. And the password...:lolblue:

Amusingly enough, I miswrote the password one time shortly after starting and then realized when I went to enter it back in that it was one character short. Oops! I had mangled things a bunch in my confusion before realizing why the password didn't look the same on paper as on the screen. Once I realized, I just tried it in frustration and :D it worked! And gave me about a million arrows I hadn't had before! :D Good times...

It's a very tedious game, yes. Not sure if it is a feature or a bug, but while you're pressing the "Start" button on the controller, the game plays in fast forward mode, which I do most of the time. Unfortunately it also speeds up the music, but at least the player is moving :lolblue:

And thank heavens, I don't need to struggle with the password, since the emulator can save anywhere. Phew...

BTW: If you still have it, I think I saw a password to activate the end-sequence at gamefaqs, so at least you can get to see that if you still want to :D

There's also other things I don't like. I'm starving most of the time. Such a giant map and so far I only found one place where you can buy apples, which seem to be the only source of food in this game.

And don't get me started on those silly "realistic" day/night cycles. Wow, it's getting so pitch black that you really don't see anything... :D

Anyway, using a walkthrough I'm making progress! I already have 2/5 golden statues which I'm supposed to find. I'm clueless how one is supposed to figure out anything in the game alone, let alone to even find anything in this giant world. In fact I'm not even trying, using a map and walkthrough combo to get anywhere... :D

Once you manage to bite through "Grimwood Forest" you'll be able to control a golden swan, which can fly you around rather quick. Finishing the game from there (incl. rescuing a princess) was pretty fast:

Funny enough, the end battle took place in some kind of magic citadel which, believe it or not, would reverse the players movement on both axes :lolblue:

(Easy to cure actually: just hold the pad upside down :D)

Well, well, I definitely don't need this one for my collection. Starflight is the way better choice of the two Genesis RPGs I've been playing so far.

Some future day the "Playing..." series may see another zelda-esque adventure/rpg game in the form of "Times of Lore", but first it will continue with a shoot'em up I think.
