Playing Tracker (C64)

Hi there!

Off we go, with yet another one of those weird ancient 3D games:

Tracker is another game from the Rainbird label. After Brittish Telecom had such a massive hit on their Firebird label with Elite, they really seemed to jump onto anything as long as it looked somewhat complicated and had 3D graphics. Remember Starglider and The Sentinel? Yup, all the same publisher ;)

Rainbird was the prestige label of Brittish Telecom and they tried to make these games really special. They would add an audio tape with the games sondtrack for example, or as in this case add a 30 page novel for a background story. Starglider even had both I think. And IIRC did my original Tracker tape come with a poster.

Now in Tracker you're fighting with some mighty AI over the control for some grid structure. You're controlling vehicles moving around the grid, the computer controls some and when they meet, they fight. Which is a very lame 3D action scene

Your main goal is to destroy the center spot in the middle of the grid. And the computer AI will defend it with everything it has available.

Of course in my first attempt today I failed miserably. Reminded me of the times when I was playing it as a kid

At least I learned enough to have some ideas for a better try tomorrow ;)

BTW: There's also 16-Bit variants (Atari ST and MS-DOS) of Tracker available. The conversion team didn't really like the C64 version tough, so after some iterations they ended up with a significantly different game. AFAIK they even wrote a second novel for a new background story.

Greetings,

Manuel

Phew... I managed to conquer about half the grid tonight, 10/22 sectors.

This is a very tough game, too bad there isn't a trainer version available.

The major showstopper is some kind of approval meter. You start with 1000 points here and it increases when you destroy enemy things and it decreases when you call for reinforcements.

I need to take more care for my skimmer vehicles, trying to use as few as possible tomorrow.

After pausing last night (Germany-Finland 3:3 ;)), I had a very good game tonight! I was just focusing on a single skimmer and that apparently does the trick! I managed to conquer all but 8 sectors now and have still over 800 points left, so chances are very good that I can possibly beat it tomorrow :D

And once again I'm victorious in the end:

It seems nobody really expected that someone would actually win this, as with displaying this screen the map section went buggy. (There's no '1' displayed in the white skimmer circle, and my reserve skimmer got magically duplicated.)

As you can see, I didn't conquer all sectors, there's 4 remaining, indicated by the yellow '+' symbols. At this point I just took the risk and went straight into the core.

While I didn't use any real cheat or trainer, I was using a lot of savestates, so this was mostly a tool assisted victory. Not sure if it can be done without. It is a very, very, very hard game.

It's also not a very good game. I just have this irrational weakness for ancient 8-Bit 3D games. They manage to fascinate me somehow ;)

Some future day the "Playing..." series may see an even weirder 3D game in the form of "Cholo", but first there's some more ems to shoot up.
