Crazy Coin Collectors

I stayed up until 3am watching the various coin shows on Shop NBC and QVC (I would only recommend doing this if you have no life). Which makes me wonder: Why do coin collectors stay up until all hours of the night ordering bizarre expensive things from the TV shopping channels? Don't these people have jobs? If not, then they could stay up until 4am watching bizarre things, but then where does their money to buy these things come from? Two set of 50 state quarters (Denver and Philadelphia mint) probably proof state 70; A bunch of peace dollars from the late 1800s in shiny condition for only a few thousand dollars. My coin collection of countries. The most I've ever spent for one is $4. Most of them range from 50 cents to a couple dollars. I actually found a few that weren't with the rest of them, and decided to add a United States quarter from 1995, put it in a cardboard thingy, wrote "United States" and put it with the rest of them even though I live there and have hundreds of various US coins lying around my room. And, if anyone from the UK is reading this, I'd like a coin from there. I have Ireland, but not the UK. I have one from Jersey. I wonder why Jersey needed their own coin. It says "Balliwick of Jersey" and it's from 1964. I have one from the British Virgin Islands and the British Caribbean, but no Britian itself.

Real collectors don't watch those shows:

1. the prices are far too high

2. there's nothing there which can't be obtained elsewhere (for less)

3. buying a complete set takes all the "fun" out of collecting - tracking down that one last piece to make the collection complete

Of course someone must be buying it, or they wouldn't be selling it.

1. people who have more money than time

2. people buying gifts for someone else

3. people buying collections as an "investment"

4. people just starting out who haven't learned that you can collect without buying retail
