Playing Robocop (NES)

Hi there!

Someone just reminded me to feed the fish, erm... I mean "Playing..." another NES game, so watch out for Robocop:

I never really got into the hype around Robocop. As far as I remember, even back when I was 13, I never considered him cool or some such, just a halfway decent popcorn flic.

I also never saw any of the sequels and somehow managed to ignore all the games as well, even when some got (for licence games) respectable reviews.

This NES game is kind of a little oddball, since as far as I know is it a port of a C64 game. I'm not 100% sure, but I think even the Robocop Arcade was modeled after the C64 game and not vice-versa. (Someone correct me if I'm wrong ;))

It's not bad (for a licenced game). The game has six mostly sidescrolling levels inspired from events of the movie. Robocop can usually punch or shoot all kinds of enemies running through those levels trying to stop him. What takes a while to get used to is that he can't jump. Ducking doesn't help much either, so most encounters are a matter of hitting the other first.

Graphics are neat and the music is just average. Of course there's a couple of boss battles and extras, but Robocops most fearsome enemy actually is the time limit - when it ends, so does Robocops only life.

Well, besides continues there's savestates these days, so getting to the end was only a matter of time:

Some future day the "Playing..." series may see its sequel "Robocop 2", but first it'll continue with something else.

Greetings,

Manuel

I have always thought this game was a total dog. You can't jump and, though you are Robocop, you can rarely shoot since a gun and bullets are hard to find.

I think Robocop always has the basic gun equipped, which even has unlimited ammo. He is just automatically deciding when he wants to use it. At some points in the levels he just puts it away. I didn't read the manual, so I've no idea why he does that though

I've seen much worse NES games, so I'd consider it an average experience. But definitely nothing worth buying :)
