Hi there!
Introducing none other than Lara Crofts dad, Rick Dangerous:
Oh yes! While Core Design probably didn't have much of a life after making Tomb Raider, they definitely did before! I've been looking forward to featuring the early Core titles in this series ever since I played "Son of Chuck", my favorite Sega Master System game.
Rick Dangerous probably wasn't their first game overall, but definitely the first that left an impression. If you've never played it, you can think of it as an evolution of games like Montezumas Revenge or H.E.R.O.
Through 4 different platforming scenarios you're guiding the Indiana Jones inspired action hero. Starting somewhere in a jungle, on it goes through a pyramid, then against Nazis and Russians. Each level is about 25 screens big in the C64 version I played, which has significantly fewer screens than the 16-Bit versions.
Rick is equipped with a 6 shot pistol and 6 dynamite sticks, but amongst various treasures he can also find additional ammo in the levels. The game is infamous for it's total try, error & memorize gameplay, since you usually figure out all the death traps by running straight into them the first time you play a screen
State-Saving to the rescue:
Unlike Son of Chuck it hasn't aged too well in my opinion, but if you're looking for a real platforming challenge to sink your teeth into, it might be worth a look
Some future day the "Playing..." series may see it's sequel "Rick Dangerous 2", but first it'll continue with something else.
Greetings,
Manuel
