What do you get when you cross electronica group The Orb with Pink Floyd's David Gilmour? This: The Orb featuring David Gilmour's "Metallic Spheres". Having purchased it yesterday, it is fast becoming one of my favorite albums. The only shame is that it isn't longer. There are two tracks: Metallic Side and Spheres Side. Metallic Side is almost 29 minutes long, while Spheres side is only a little over 20 minutes long. My only other experience listening to The Orb was I got their 1995 album "Orbus Terrarum," Let's say this album is a lot prettier sounding than that one. Both the Orb and David Gilmour have aged wonderfully. This album, full of sweeping background SFX, but with a nice drum beat and techno sounds. Gilmour sings for a little bit, one of the only lyrics in the whole album is "Do you believe in justice? Do you believe in freedom?" As for how it sounds, I guess the best way to explain it is Tangerine Dream meets Godspeed, with a little of A Positive Life thrown in for good measure, but it really has a sound of its own. Nice electronica music, and a must-own if you're into that sort of thing.
