The Grinch That Stole Your Internet

but even better as there is a better type friends code

A better type of friends code is like saying there is a better type of cancer. No matter what, it still sucks.

Exactly. Friend codes suck. Until Nintendo goes with an Xbox Live type of online interface, it be a sub-par online experience.

If you don't like listening to 13 year old boys cuss at you etc...turn the voice chat feature off :)

well thast why its free. i wouldnt pay for xbox live every year, i think its a waist, so ill put up with the freinds codes for a price tag of $00.00 a year.

am I right in thinking that there's just a one time payment of $5 for the wii browser, then it's free forever, no monthy fees or charges to your phone bill etc.

Yes.

I have no idea if they'll charge for upgrades or not, though.

The official Nintendo forum has multiple threads running about this right now. So far the consensus is that you can use the beta browser indefinitely if you have it, but the 1.0 release will cost you 500 points whether you have the beta or not. The speculation is that this is to pay off Adobe so the browser can include a Flash 9 plugin.

Personally, I'd rather they just include an x264 plugin instead.

I know this sounds really dumb (I don't own a Wii, yet!) but am I right in thinking that there's just a one time payment of $5 for the wii browser, then it's free forever, no monthy fees or charges to your phone bill etc. That sounds too good to be true!

I think "too good to be true" might be pushing it. All they're doing is not forcing you to double-pay for the internet you already pay for. And letting you browse it at 1/10th efficiency with a point-and-click interface for typing. That is worth exactly "free", and charging anything for it would be laughable.

The as-of-yet nonexistent online play has yet to be evaluated, and could well be terrible. You never know. Nintendo seems to be vaguely aware of the internet, at best. :)

I don't know why people argue over this. The 1.0 browser is already out, already free, and has already been announced to be free to keep indefinitely. The Beta is ancient history at this point.

Also, Adobe has yet to release a devkit for Flash 8, much less Flash 9. Unless something major has changed, there's no need to "pay off" Adobe for Flash 9, because there's no Flash 9 for Opera to use.

Why so cynical? You're not paying for the Internet, you're paying for a web browser. Possibly the most advanced web browser on any console right now. There are dozens upon dozens of Wii Compatible sites at the moment, and more appearing every day. $5 is actually not a bad value for the amount of Wii-targeted content that's on the 'Net right now.

A few examples:

http://www.wiicade.com (didn't expect that one, did you? ;))

http://video.stumbleupon.com (there's a really cool interface that can only be seen on the Wii)

http://www.google.com/reader/view/?ui=wii (RSS news reader for the Wii- by GOOGLE! :-o)

http://www.finetune.com/wii/ (music on the Wii)

http://www.wiitube.com (a youtube interface for the Wii)

http://www.virginradio.co.uk/ (Virgin Radio... now of the Wii!)

http://www.yatsha.com (Great shooter game for the Wii)

http://www.redkawa.com/mediacenters/wiimediacenterx/ && http://www.orb.com/ (programs to stream your music from your computer to your Wii)

http://mapwii.com/ (Google Maps, on your Wii!)

Well, I'm trying to provide an alternative with WiiCade's multiplayer, so even if Nintendo doesn't "get it" maybe the homebrew community will. If anyone wants a pre-release devkit, just send me a PM. It supports both Flash 7.0 games and Javascript-based games. :)

I understand that, i was just talking about the "Golly, that's so cheap as to be impossible!" attitude that runs rampant in conjunction with Nintendo product and policy these days. A monthly fee for a web browser (especially what's still a pretty inefficient one) would be ridiculous, and a one-time fee is the absolute most that can be expected out of you for what is at best a moderately useful console utility. It's adequate, i'm just saying it stops far short of "too good to be true". :)

It would be ridiculous. Which is why Opera is not going to be charging one. I have no idea why this stupid rumor won't die.

It's not "too good to be true", but I wouldn't call it "moderately useful". When used in conjunction with sites like the one I've listed above, I think you'll get a lot more entertainment out of it than if you had purchased an NES game on the VC. :)

No doubt, but then again i also think $5 for an NES rom is crazy. :)
