8th lutz
http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/26/tricks-a...staff-laid-off/ One could make an argument that the writing's been on the wall for the plus thirteen year veteran of the magazine scene, Tips & Tricks, but not like this it wasn't. The story, as told by freelance contributor Jeb Haught, is one of shameful deceit and not at all deserved of the publication. Thinking that they would be off attending E3, head honcho and porn-peddler supreme, Larry Flynt, planned ahead to lay off the staff this week while off promoting the magazine. So harebrained was this plan that Larry Flynt Publications sent "dear john" letters to Tips & Tricks freelancers a week early, thus spoiling the plot before it even had time to hatch. Now very much aware of the situation, Tips & Tricks staffers will spend the rest of this week -- their last week, emptying out desks and picking up the pieces. Having spoken to those behind the magazine, fights for severance pay are true and everything else is touch and go. Tips & Tricks may continue as a semi-regular cheat depository, but honestly, what good is that?
Tempest
I had no idea LFP owned Tips & Tricks. Wow... Tempest
Crazy Climber
I have watched Tips&Tricks slowly dissapear from the magazine racks over the last year or so. I had no idea either that Flynt owned it, not shocked or anything but a little suprised.
+Random Terrain
Before I got on the Internet, magazines were my only connection to the video game and computer world, but I don't think I have even looked a game related magazine at the store since I got an Internet connection in 1999. You can get most of the info online for free, so who needs a magazine, especially for tips and tricks? Emehr
At the bookstore I would always flip to the back of the mag for the classic gaming section. After a quick read, back on the rack it would go.

That was done by Joe Santulli of Digital Press I beleive....

Not much like it on the internet unless you scanned those pages in
DreamTR
I worked at Tips & Tricks for over 8 years. It's amazing reading these message boards and fansites and newssites how little everyone actually knew about the magazine, who wrote what, and the capabilities of the writers themselves. Buyatari
I would grab a copy at the drugstore flip to collectors corner and then the 1 page with the promo items they showed. Then like you guys said I'd put it back and walk out. Still it will be missed if just for 2-3 pages a month.
jboypacman
I think almost everybody just grabbed the mag and thumbed through it and put it back in the rack.Sad but true.

It's amazing reading these message boards and fansites and newssites how little everyone actually knew about the magazine, who wrote what, and the capabilities of the writers themselves. About the only thing I was vaguely aware of was that Chris Bienek (sp?) was part of the staff. Anyone who has read Video Games & Computer Entertainment back in the early 90's may remember him as the writer of the portable gaming section ("Gaming on the Go", I think it was called). I liked reading that section because Chris seemed to have a very positive attitude about the Lynx (which I was just getting into at the time) and seemed to favor it over the B&W GameBoy. EGM, on the other hand, had sort of a "Meh, whatever" attitude.
Bill Brasky
It seemed like the same magazine every month, just the back pages changed. Who cared to read the letters from 8 year olds asking about Sonic? I can't imagine anyone subscribing to it.
Buyatari
This just in. Larry Flynt with a last ditch effort to save the mag has instead renamed it to Tits and Tricks. Expect readership to be up 1000% with the 11-18yr category.

S1500
So, is this the first paper magazine made obsolete by the easily-searchable gamefaqs.com?

2600Lives
Wow, I used to respect Flynt for giving the big middle finger to the conservatives and doing what he wanted, but damn. Seems this is the month to be losing respect for people everywhere.
8bitgamer
The newest issue has a nifty article on the best arcades by Classic Gamer Magazine guru Chris Cavanaugh. http://brettweisswords.blogspot.com/
gavv
one of the others that recently had started work there iirc was the new chief editor, Bill Kunkel, who was part of the founders of the original Electronic Games magazine. gavv
Jess Ragan
Larry Flynt has always been a pig... the cancellation of Tips & Tricks just offers more evidence of that. At least editor Chris Bieniek was able to bail out early before he got burned like the rest of the staff. Here's hoping they'll all find more stable careers with companies firmly rooted in the video game industry. JR

Tips & Tricks will still be publlishing quarterly special issues.
