_Fandal_
Hi! I'm working on file version of 64kB XEGS cart "Desert Falcon" and I was really surprised how bad this game is. I've neved played Desert Falcon on A8 before so it really was a shock. It looks more like unfinished proto. Lousy sounds, not very good graphics and faulty game engine. When I tried this game for the first time I couldn't believe I have the original dump. So I searched the net, tried different webs to download the dump but with the same result. Game engine simply sucks!! Main character disapears from time to time, it's displayed on wrong position or it has wrong colors. How could Atari officially release this poor game? Or am I missing something? Your opinions, please. F. Edited August 16, 2007 by _Fandal_
Rybags
Agreed, it's shit. I'd even go so far as asking you "WTF are you wasting your time converting it?" I've only played it a couple of times. Got it on cart in an eBay auction.

Rybags
The most ironic thing is that it's on a 64K ROM. How could you have that much space available, yet still turn out rubbish? Then again, there's tons of games on dual-layer DVD that you would relegate to coasters if given the choice.
Bryan
The most ironic thing is that it's on a 64K ROM. BASIC takes up a lot of space.
Goochman
Besides poor gameplay is doesnt keep your score - so if you were playing this to achieve a new record or such take a picture quickly since when you lose your last life it quickly goes to the home screen never to show your score again............... +CharlieChaplin
Well, producing A8 cartridge shells today is very expensive. So why not use bad+lousy cart. games like "Desert Falcon" and other bad XE/XEGS carts (in my eyes Thunderfox is also quite bad) as cart. shells for selfmade cartridges ?!? Thats what I do. And if everyone uses Desert Falcon as a cart. shell, the cart may gets rare someday -Andreas Koch.
Tempest
(in my eyes Thunderfox is also quite bad) It's not bad, it's just FREAKIN' HARD! I can't last more than a few minutes in that game. Tempest
+Cafeman
I kind of like the 7800 version - how much different is the XEGS version?
+MrFish
I kind of like the 7800 version - how much different is the XEGS version? Four words... Poorly implemented diagonal scrolling...

Because I haven't seen the game yet, how about some screenshots... or a source for getting it?

carmel_andrews
The 7800 was the better version (only ever saw that version once)...To me, DF was just a very overpriced, poor mans version of Bluemax/panther type games
emkay
Hm.... got splitted here with my opinion. First there is a game which tries to be a "fun" version of the named "Panther". Well, it is funny, somehow. On the other hand it allover looks like : It turned out to be a fun version, because the coder couldn't do better. The sounds are almost horrible and there seems to not even one DLI used. Can it be, that there is no charmode used? Not to talk about the colour usage... or the rudimentary animations The only promising was the "sphinx" but it is same coloured as the rivers.. emkay
What makes me wonder is that "Pixel across the screen usage".... As seen here before: What made them think that it anyhow would look good?
carmel_andrews
WDWII was a better 'Commando' clone then what Atari released
Jetboot Jack
Desert Falcon A8 sucks - most disapointing cart I bought back in the day, the 7800 version rips it to shreds!! The game is just plain badly programmed!!! But as for: WDWII was a better 'Commando' clone then what Atari released GET A GRIP!!! WDWII blows compared to the real A8 Commado - NO contest!!! +MrFish
... what Atari released This was never "released" by Atari. It's a proto. Not sure how complete it is, but seems close to 100.
+remowilliams
Yeah its trash on the A8, but I like it quite a bit on the 7800. GET A GRIP!!! WDWII blows compared to the real A8 Commado - NO contest!!! You got that right. But I still like 7800 Commando more
Wrathchild
WDWII was a better 'Commando' clone then what Atari released As said already, Atari didn't release Commando - so really WDW2 was the ONLY real Commando clone on the A8 at that time (for some reason I tend to class SWAT in the same catagory, but that's stretching it a bit ). WDW2 was quite decent I thought, its a shame that one software house that practically ignored the A8's, namely Ocean, didn't have a stab at the Rambo games for us around that time. I recall at college (~1986/7) we had a Gun.Smoke machine, now something like that would have been really cool to have on the A8, but as I have it for the NES (and on a Capcom compilation I can play under PS1 emulation) they'll suffice. Allas
so boring colors in WDW II and too slow action. Id prefer Gunlaw, more playable but still a medium product.
www.atarimania.com
Actually, Gun Law (coded by English Software) started life as an official port of Commando. -- Atari Frog http://www.atarimania.com
emkay
ONLY real Commando clone on the A8 at that time (for some reason I tend to class SWAT in the same catagory, but that's stretching it a bit ). I'd say, SWAT is the best game of that type on the A8.
