I used to have a 32x, so I know a little about it, and i know the one at the thrift store didn't have the little cable that hooks to the Genesis. Also, the sega cd doesn't have any type of write protection does it? Those cables are rare-as. There was someone on gametz.com that had one but didn't actually know what it was. I don't like your chances. As for the Sega CD, "write" is obviously not the right word. Do you mean copy protection? No, you can simply burn a copy of a Mega CD and play it with no problems. However, there is region coding, so you'll need a CDX cart matching the version of your Mega CD to play stuff from different regions.
