MrAtari2600
I think its a fire hazard... Its something i've never seen before!!!! please help Alright i just pickedup an 1040 ST for free i was very excited BUT i think i know why it was free I flick the switch on hoping to hear a buzz or something and yup a buzz then a screech high pitched noises, the power light flickered a bit mostly staying off. then a wierd smell emitted as i was trying to look inside to see if something was loose/ I turned it off and unplugged immediately My only thing i can say is The power supply on it has an issue. Anyone ever seen a 1040 ST do something like this? If you have reply. I have most tools available from soldering to screwdrivers to mailing the item Thanks guys! MrAtari2600
Is it common to come across 1040ST's With power supply issues? To add on: Where is a Used/ refurbished Or even new power supply available Edited November 13, 2008 by MrAtari2600
Rybags
I initially bought a 520ST-FM 20 years ago, new. Got a day or two use out of it, then... It did almost the exact same thing - power supply want zap, smell emitted, machine then totally did not work. I'd guess both were the PSU killing itself. I took the machine back and paid the extra bucks and traded up to the 1040.

Atari_Only
Have you opened the ST? If your handy with a soldering iron you maybe able to repair the powersupply. It sounds like the capacitors dried up. If you open the case and remove the power supply, you may find the capacitors have leaked or blown apart. Replacements can be found at Radio Shack. Post a pick of the powersupply if you can.. AO

frogstar_robot
Camera has been dead sorry on no response for a while That large black cap looks bulged on top. There is also a large power semiconductor to the right you might want to look at.
MrAtari2600
Hey !!! thanks for your response the large black cap ( the one on far left fat on bottom) looks like a buldge but it isn't Also If you look above the yellow tape to left there is black o.o is that bad? i think something went there. im kind of a newbie like in most things so this is different,
Noelio
That resistor at R8 is toast.
MrAtari2600
I can pretty much agree that was my first guess YAY step in right direction! now to get all information I can My question is this small resistor could set this entire thing off as it has so far? Where can i find a replacement resistor. I can solder it but im worried about getting wrong size etc. Edited December 6, 2008 by MrAtari2600
TwiliteZoner
Camera has been dead sorry on no response for a while I noticed in the picture that the machine is still plugged in. When you start working on this, you really need to remove that power cord.
+poobah
I dont have this style of 1040 power supply handy, its hard to tell from the picture, but it looks like there used to be a cap to the right of R8.
Noelio
R8 could be blown as a result of something else or vice versa. I think it might be a symptom not a cause. I'd consider a new power supply just to be safe.
MrAtari2600
I was looking again and Read your guys responses, The cord was not hooked up sorry aha, it was just plugged in on that end the other end was out of the wall the second i had the problem R8 IS FOR SURE blown up as well as another two R102 and R 101 have black spots resembling like R 8 So im guessing theres something a tad bit bigger, better safe then sorry! Thanks for your guys help i appreciate it endlessly! If somebody has a 1040ST P/S for sale or able to sell or redo mine PLEASE contact me via this forum & Or PM Im pretty sure my basic knowledge wouldn't span far. I need to start reading books again to get bit smarter heh. Thanks again everyone and have a great day
+Stephen Moss
R8 IS FOR SURE blown upas well as another two R102 and R 101 have black spots resembling like R 8 So im guessing theres something a tad bit bigger, I assume that you have removed these and measured their resistance in comarison to the indicated value and are not just assming that as in the photo R8 looks OK although the board underneath it is cooked it may have been due to a previous fault that has since been repaired. The resistors look like standard metal file 0.6W, body size is about 8-10mm x 2-3mm. I don't have any circuit diagrams to hand but IIRC it is switch mode power supply so the capacitor and chopper transistor have probably died as one dieing usually kills the other if you can find a circuit diagram online any good TV repair shop should be able to fix it if you can not find a replacement or repair it yourself.
