What have you actually PLAYED? Weekly Top Ten for 2009

Pac-Man: ~160 min

Yeah, what shall I say... if I had Ms.Pac-Man I'd propably play rather that, but I don't own it and also I don't think the 2600 Pac-Man is unplayable. It's disappointing because it's not like the Arcade, but if you take it as what it is, its some nice game on the 2600, good timekiller. However, I like to play that in B/W mode, I don't like the colors. I normally play in game mode 5, switching the difficulty to either Novice or Expert depending on mood.

Pac-Man Arcade is the way to go.

Ok,

Started this week off playing some strange ones.

Atari 2600:

Air Raid 50 minutes

Bugs Bunny 20 minutes

Played BB because Wikeycolumbus mentioned it the other day and Air Raid because of YEARS of reading all the mysteries and controversy surrounding it. Gotta say while it DOES sound like Space Jockey it is a MUCH better game and more fun to play.

Interesting - only two games in the top 50 between the Colecovision and the 5200. The 2600 still rules!

You wouldn't happen to have kept stats on how many people played each game, would you? One fanatic playing a game for 8 hours a day for a couple of weeks could make a game look pretty darned popular, so it'd be nice to know how many people played the games -- esp the top 10 or so.

If not, no biggie -- it's just something I'm curious about. :)

No, I've only logged the minutes played. In Kaboom!'s case, it has been played by multiple people and I think I've logged minutes for it in all but one week. It's possible that all of the minutes from Park Patrol have come from Kurt. It does skew the stats for awhile (maybe a long while) but now that he's accomplished his goal, it will be interesting to watch other games pass it. We need to convince more people to post in order to reduce the weight for any one individual and give the polls more credibility. High Score Club games are also represented disproportionately. I doubt that Ram It or Buck Rogers in particular would have scored nearly as high without the benefit of being the HSC game of the week. The other thing I noticed is that Sears/Atari games that have separate names seem to be at a disadvantage to Sears/Atari carts with the same name. I'm considering combining games like Breakout and Breakaway IV since they're actually the same title.

I think the Sears/Atari titles should be combined if they are indeed the same game.

I think the previous post has a good point about one player playing a particular game for 8 hours straight. However, I don't know how you would determine if 100 hours of Park Patrol played by 1 person would not rank as high as 80 minutes of Kaboom played by 3 people. Some sort of formula would have to be derived, but I don't know what that would be.

In any event, I don't know how much time you could devote to managing these proposed changes. Personally, I don't mind seeing the total minutes for the week by itself and I would shrug seeing "100 minutes by one person." Seeing a ranking based on a said formula would be better, however.

I'm under the weather and I doubt you'll get me to crank out a proposed formula today.

In any event, this is one of my favorite threads. My previous comments about only counting games on the actual hardware (and not emulators) has more to do about collecting and playing those nostalgic games as they were meant to be played on their respective native consoles.

How ever you want to handle it is good with me; I was just curious. I appreciate you spending your time to keep track of our time in games at all! :)

I'll just take the numbers at face value and not try to draw any conclusions about the current popularity of any game.

I haven't had much time to play any games, and the only game I've spent any time with in the last few weeks is my new-to-me copy of Gateway to Apshai on my XEGS, and I spent about 30 minutes with it. Great game - it's one I've wanted for a long time. I've had my eyes open for it for a couple years now, but never saw it in the wild, so I finally picked up a copy on ebay.

Pulled out my A8 disk collection and went through a few last night...

Montezuma's Revenge (32K, unlimited lives) - 10 minutes

Up 'N' Down - 5 minutes of bump 'n' jump for crazy people :D

Tapper - 30 minutes (I like this version best)

Canyon Climber - 15 minutes

Carnival Massacre - 5 minutes

Frogger (John Harris version) -15 minutes

I also played a couple of games whose names I've forgotten. One was by Bill Hogue, but it's not in the Atarimania database (under his name, anyway). It was called Crash or something like that. Each level was a room, and you moved your guy around, avoiding these little randomly-moving objects, and picking up diamond-shaped objects. Touching the moving guys is deadly, touching the walls is deadly. When you die, your character sort of vibrates.

Another one was published by Antic, but again I've forgotten the name. It was a side-scrolling shooter. The first wave is meteorites or asteroids, then you get some ships mixed in with it. Very well drawn objects, very colorful.

I'll look these up if I get a chance tonight...
