JonnyBritish
What do you think is the best top down racer for Atari. Electraglide was interesting but looking for a super sprint style game. All the posts about Monaco GP has got me trying to find a decent top down racer for the Atari XL
+therealbountybob
Rally Speedway's gotta be the most fun and Grand Prix Simulator is also worth a play. Have tried to get into Junkyard Racing but paddle control is difficult as over-sensitive to the turns, think there is a joystick version somewhere
spookt
Well Pole Position was my first ever Atari game, and the first computer game I played with color and sound. I know it's not great, but I still love to play it even now.
Heaven/TQA
there are not many but I had fun with - Great American Cross Country Road Race - Pole Position - Rally Speedway - Grand Prix Simulator - Racing Destruction Set (really... ) Elektra Glide was nice from coding point of view but as game I don't know...

I used to play that for hours! I never got on with Electra Glide, I wanted to like it but it seemed too hard.
johnny_boy
I'm not crazy about it, but Speed Up (& Gold Edition) exist.

beamer320i
Definately thumbs up for Great American Cross Country Road Race! Another racer I liked was On-Track by Gamestar, nice! Also have fond memories of playing Speedway Blast by IDSI on my 400 in '83...happy days! Edited February 16, 2010 by beamer320i

+CharlieChaplin
Well, besides Pole Position, I like Pitstop very much, whereas Pitstop 2 is just okay (better gfx, but lame game). Maybe one day, someone will enhance Pitstop into a multi-player and realtime racing game (via multilink/gamelink network or in another way)... And err, if you like Grand Prix Sim. you may want to give the german PD games "Hot Wheels" and "Go-Kart" a short look. Attached them here (Games174.ATR from the Homesoft collection contains Hot Wheels as a single XEX-file)... -Andreas Koch. Wrathchild
Codemasters' BMX Simulator was fun - but I can't recall ever beating the last stage
snicklin
Hours ago I wanted to write that but I didn't remember the name of your game... That may be a blessing in disguise if I rename it later! The name sounds a little like an Atari produced game, if anyone has any other good ideas, let me know. All the posts about Monaco GP has got me trying to find a decent top down racer for the Atari XL Rally Speedway is the best / most fun top-down racer for my money. On-Track from Gamestar is a pretty good "Super-Sprint" clone -- although it punishes you too much for going off the road in my opinion.
a8isa1
Baja Buggies is very fun. Infuriating until you learn to get a 'push' from the car behind and then you begin to enjoy the game Edited November 11, 2014 by a8isa1
mattlacey
+1 for Great American Cross Country Road Race One of my favourite games on the 8-bits, granted you're not really racing in the truest sense with the AI, but saving your scores out and trying to beat them is great fun.
adam242
Quick and dirty fun, its Rally Speedway.... If you have 5-10 minutes (more, if you really get into it) to spend, Great American Cross Country Road Race is the BEST 8-bit racer, bar NONE.

ryanmercer
Slightly related, what was that popular arcade one? I remember Aladain's Castle and Showbiz both had it when I was a kid... it was an Indy-style car if I remember correctly. Then there was a similar sit-down arcade one that the Putt-Putt places around me had where your car had guns and there were semis... Did these ever have 8-bit atari ports? That would be Spy Hunter... they made a very good port for the 8-bits.

pseudografx
Let's add E-Type and above all Stunt Car Racer to the list! (Though the latter requires a 130XE or any Atari machine expanded to 128KB or more.) https://a8.fandal.cz/detail.php?files_id=7249 https://a8.fandal.cz/detail.php?files_id=7541 Edited December 17, 2023 by pseudografx
