From what I understand this is the FIRST time since XBox Live started that there has been a price change. First increase in, what, four years? That's not bad. I wish my cable company did that. :)

Also, as others have said, it's still pretty cheap. I took advantage of a sale offer Newegg was having a while ago and I'm locked in with XBox Live paid for for another year. With all the things I do on XBox Live -- Netflix, online gaming, DLC games from small companies, soon ESPN -- it's a worthwhile investment to me.

Yeah I changed the thread title as a gag, have to apologize for misleading anyone. Its 60 bucks and I guess they will offer a platinum service soon.

$100 for a platinum service was speculation by an analyst.

Edit your thread subtitle, it's deceptive and adds to an already confusing situation.

4 years? Try 8. Xbox Live launched in November of 2002 and the price is the same today as it was the day it launched.

I'll give this thing a year before I make a judgment of whether to continue having Xbox Live Gold. At the very least I can now watch Netflix on the TV, though I still have my Wii Netflix disc on hand.

Really let's talk about the real cost of Xbox Live. At full price (which hardly anyone pays) it's 5 bucks a month.

I pay for Usenet service at $15/month. My consumer reports online subscription is $7/month (I need to cancel that crap ). Lots of subscriptions are far more than $5/month. And lets be real.. most of us get it on sale, so REALLY comes out to $2-$3 a month in reality. This crap is cheap sucka!

And to me it's the quality of the service that I like vs. just "allowing you to play online". The connection is solid, fast, full of content, and I'm usually online playing a competitive game within 2 minutes of starting up my 360. I'll pay the price for a managed service if it's what I like. Heck, I pay for Usenet. :P

It is a better service than the free PSN. When I have an update for PSN, I need to go have a cup of tea. Or boot up my 360 and play something on that.

XBL could use improving, but at least it unquestionably works. I'm interested in a platinum service, if it offers something exciting. But unfortunately they'll have to find something exciting to make it worthwhile. Can't think of what that would be.

I once updated the $5 arcade title PAIN and it took over an hour!

(There's like 9 updates to that game and god forbid you buy a second PS3 and update them all at once)

A cup of tea? More like a pot of tea.

The PS3 updating and downloads are horrific. The only thing I miss from Gold is the deal of the week since I don't play online as much anymore. Silver isn't bad at all, still pretty fast and no issues.

Just this past week I'm considering Netflix (the family wants it), anyone know if you need Gold for that?

Yeppers, Netflix is a Gold membership feature only. Its free on the Wii and PS3.... at least for the present.

By the way.. anyone else think the term "silver" is funny? It's their fancy name for nothing. You either subscribe to xblive or not. I guess that means I'm a silver member of nytimes.com and various porno sites too since I don't subscribe to any of them. :P

Mm.. Yes and No. You still have the ability to purchase from the marketplace, download at fast speeds in those cases, will still appear online on buddies' lists, and it ties everything bought to your gamer tag as usual in case you want to recover your games from a different console. Your account also crosses over to the PC and you can play online there for free with the Silver account.

OK, nevermind, I guess it is just a fancy name..

The best time for Gold is around christmas time, you can find some killer deals for Gold membership as well as games. Its insane how many deals happen around that time. Need to save my cash the next few months. :P

Yep I agree. Check Amazon the next few months and you'll find some great deals on cards!

I've never paid full price for a membership. In fact back in the day I used to get the kits off eBay for like $50 and with everything included ( 12 month Gold, headset, Live points, arcade game code, coupon for $20 off a game) it was like getting Live Gold for free.
