Monkey Labs Night Light Pre-Order

Recommended Posts

Monkey Labs is going to start producing CX-40 night lights in the near-to-distant future. However, the last project I did (lamps) didn't end up being cost-effective enough due to price point causing a lack of interest (believe me, I understand, no hard feelings, those babies were EXPENSIVE). So therefore, I am going to take "pre-order interest" in a bulk lot of night lights before I produce them.

Here are the current design option mock-ups created so far (NOTE: These are ROUGH mock-ups, the final product will not look this rough at all):

The night light can be seen here in their basic, non-designed form: http://www.atariage.com/forums/topic/177645-monkey-labs-is-back/. Note the shade is not patterned yet and it's a very, very rough prototype. The metal posts on the production model will not be seen, the shade will be lower, and the shade will obviously have a pattern of some sort on it to make it cooler.

I want to produce 50 of these, as I feel anything less than that volume sadly won't be worth materials and labor. This will be in the next couple of months to summer; perhaps sooner if I get supplies ordered and enough interest is garnered, but once you express interest, please don't expect a production shipped to you in the next 24-48 hours sort of thing. Once you express interest either in the thread publicly or via PM to me, I will put you on the list and you'll be "locked in". After enough interest I will send a mass PM out to ensure there is still interest and then we'll start from there. Those of you who are old hands to AA are familiar with the way this works, since it's the way pretty much everything that gets "produced" works. :)

After calculating cost of materials and everything involved, I can do these for $40 plus shipping. I know that seems like a lot, but I've done some calculation of total costs to produce them and that's a very, very narrow margin for me to cover labor and everything -- and that's not including ink costs for the shade design yet, so if that seems expensive, I apologize in advance.

These will also include a Monkey Labs certificate of creation. They will be a numbered release, and I probably won't be making more of them once this set is completed and shipped. I'll try to squeeze in enough time to get these done ASAP once interest is filled up completely, but as stated above, please don't expect a "shipped next day" statement once you express interest.

I should probably re-name this to "Interest Check" as that's more what it is -- just seeing if 50 people would be interested in orders so that I can fill them. :) No money is necessary until I get production completed (which will be in the future) but I do need interest from parties before I will start orders.

I have 4 days off from work so I'm going to make a couple preliminary designs for the shade and finish up my prototype. Expect pics of it in the near future. I'm thinking of going with a seamless background in a solid color with floating Fujis in different colors and sizes -- should look really cool on a night light as I think box scans/manual scans/etc are too large for such a small shade. Fortunately the shade is small enough I can make a template quite easily and get orders done relatively quickly once production starts.

Expect pics soon! :) I'm already 1/5 of the way there with 10 interested parties. I need 40 more however!

I'll edit and add a couple design photos to the top post, but TWO LAMPSHADE DESIGNS ARE DONE as of today! These are just paper mock-ups and they are very, very, VERY, emphasis on the *very* rough mock-ups. I wasn't interested in making it clean and perfect, I just wanted to see what the designs looked like. The reason? I'm not going with a designed opaque paper for these shades. I'm getting quotes soon for a printed fabric to put on the shades. VERY COOL! So these will look a heck of a lot better than anything I've made before. I'm currently knocking out a lampshade template in Adobe Illustrator and then once I get all the lampshade designs done for options, I'll print some fabric and we'll be well on the way!

Apologies in advance for the photo setting, I had to take these in my apartment restroom as it was the only place that got dark enough! This is with a 15W bulb I bought today to test. Looks much more like a night light. Remember, this is a very rough mock-up shade on a rough prototype model night light. The production runs will look MUCH better. :) When I get my template I will be able to rotate the images in accordance with the shade so everything will be straight, so ignore the lines. As stated also this is just rough 20lb bond paper from Staples so it doesn't flow properly. Fabric will be much, much nicer by far!

Very nice! I like them myself. We have both a Combat tank battle going on and in the air, a biplane war of massive proportions! I am planning on doing an Indy 500 race, a huge Space Invaders battle, an Adventure map, and probably a couple other ones for options for orders. They'll be very similar to this in style -- box scans won't work because they're too big and I really wanted to be creative and go with something original.

NOTE: My camera is pretty crappy so the colors look washed out when the night light is on. They are very vibrant in person, as the owners of my lamps will attest.

Up first, on the ground, the Combat tanks are in a large-scale continental war!

In the air, the biplane squadrons are really going at it too!

Anyone considering ordering and those who have expressed interest:

I have found a digital online fabric printing company that will give me a good quote of anywhere between $15-$20 a yard for fabric. A square yard should potentially do anywhere from 3-6 lampshades, but I have to get the template for them first before I can make any judgments on that. This may cause the price of the ngiht lights to go up by around $3-$7 each, but I'll do some accountancy when I get the template and figure out the numbers. $20 per yard for 3 lampshades, and I want to do 5 design options -- once I get all the design options done I'll PM everyone letting them know that the options are ready, so I can figure out how much fabric I will have to order.
