Mario: 64,070

I forgot to play that one at Funspot.

edit: Elevator: 30,250

I tried this one but I could not get use to the position of the fire-jump button side by side.

On my mame cabinet they are on top of each other.

With vacation, work, and being in my cousin's wedding it took some marathon sessions to work through all the games in this tourney, but here are my entries:

Phoenix: 14,750 (no 100k trick for me; couldn't get it to work :( )

Paperboy: 8500 (what kind of controller does the real machine have?)

Zaxxon: 35,300 (played on 2600 back in the day and that sucks, but this one rocks)

Elevator Action: 18,950 (very cool game concept, but I find the controls very clunky)

Popeye: 51,160

Mario Bros: 72,520

Gyruss: 163,650

Bosconian: 240,730 (very cool game I'd never heard of. Would be cool as a dual stick shooter)

Missile Command: 45,330

Crystal Castles: 81,188 (wish I'd had time to try the warping)

I just realized...I don't think I formerly introduced myself. So......

Hey! I'm mr. toast, and I enjoy playing video games, mainly the old classics on MAME. This is my first time actually submitting scores and getting help from forums, so I hope everything works out. Honestly, I was going to wait until next season, but these are some epic games you guys choose.

Hopefully that gets me back on track. Anyway...

Correction: Bosconian was played on Medium settings and the previous AA scores were submitted using Easy settings. So therefore, the Bosconian score in this tournament is an inaugural score and not a new record.

D'OH--so close! :)

Well played Mr. T. Nice Zaxxon score! I must admit, I crammed in about 2 hours straight just before the deadline to get my score--tough game. Great fun, though. The one thing about it that I'm still struggling with is the "space" scenes where you're just dogfighting the spaceships. Can somebody tell me how in the world you're supposed to be able to judge the "altitude" of the enemies? I ended up adopting a strategy where I'd just stay at the top and pick 'em off as they ventured upward. It seemed to work OK, but I only got the bonus once, so there has to be a better way.

Can somebody tell me how in the world you're supposed to be able to judge the "altitude" of the enemies?

I can't figure it out and that's why I hate the game.

The answer to the earlier question about PaperBoy: it used handle bars to steer and acceleration (push to go fast/pull to slow down).

Yeah, I ended up getting pretty good at judging how to fly through the small holes on the brick walls in the other part of the game using the altitude meter and shadow of the ship. But I'm still at a loss for the space sequence.

Re: Paperboy. Ahh, that makes sense. I assume the controls are analog? The game just didn't feel right at all with my 8-way Happ, and now I understand why.

Walking through the whole thing...

When approaching the first wall, stay at the highest altitude and as right as possible. That way, if timed right, you can drop down quickly and to the right to get the 1000 pt satellite

for the space scene...I really don't know how I pulled it off. What I do know is as the four planes are doing their circle formation in the beginning, get to the top right and hit the fuel tank thing. The next three planes will start at that same altitude so just fly to the right. After that I just avoid everything, and even that is hard.

The Zaxxon robot is pretty easy. Get to about a notch and a half from the bottom and start at the 2nd hexagon from the left. Zaxxon starts somewhere around there and just follow him.

rmaerz: getting through the walls? I shoot really fast and see if the shots go through. It's really faint but if the shots deflect I move a little to see if it goes through.

Another thing is that I actually mastered Super Zaxxon first, which is MUCH harder than Zaxxon.

Other than that, I'm surprised I got this tournament. I saw some scores and freaked out pretty bad. icon_mrgreen.gif

Look at the pic I uploaded in post #52

For the first scene, if you stay at 1.5 altitude you will be able to shoot the canon and you will fly above there missiles.

Just make sure you avoid the rockets, it's like a maze game!

Also, try to shoot as many planes as possible, it will decrease the count, I think it start at 20, and if you get the 20 planes (1 scene + space scene) you get 1000 points.

For the space level I move up and down right in front of a space ship and I usually get him.

An X appear when you are right in front of it.

For the robot, I go to 2.5 altitude and aim at the missile (middle right on the robot), I usually get it before it launches.

I got most of those tips from Joystick magazine!

You guys need to post your scores sooner!!!

I like a good competition but posting all 10 scores at T-34minutes does not give me a lot a time trying to beat some of those scores ... especially at 2:30AM :)

I had a feeling somebody would rib me for this. :)

To be fair, I just happened to be out of town for two of the weekends (which is when I do most of my playing) and really had to scramble to devote even 10-15 minutes to 3 or 4 of the games. At least half of my scores were achieved only a few hours before they were posted on the last day.

I guess the moral of the story is, you can't rest on your laurels just because it looks like you've got a comfy lead--you gotta get your absolute best score out there. :D
