fibrewire
Had one on loan, had to return it after a year. So no, goal not met. And yes, I'm bumping it back to $2000
Atari8bitCarts
Just $2000? I would assume that drive goes for much, much more than that.

bitslice2901
Hi! I have a Atari 815 drive that was obtained from a former Atari engineer back in the mid 90s. It's been gently tucked away in a sealed box and stored since that time. I assume it is a prototype, because there is no serial number on the unit. Cosmetic condition is pretty good overall, but the plastic case could use a little touch up with 409. No idea if it is working or not, as I don't have a DOS disk nor any means of testing it (my 800 system is also buried in storage...somewhere). The only minor issue I know of is that both floppy drive door latches are missing the tiny white plastic hinge pins. Not broken, just missing (they fall out). This was a common design problem with some 5.25" drives of that time (it also happened on my friend's TRS-80 Model III which used similar drives). However, I can hear something small rattling around inside the case, so at least one of these pins may have fallen inside. These pins can probably be salvaged from another common drive. Anyway, if anyone is interested, please let me know. Serious inquiries and continental US only, please. I'm located a few miles north of the San Francisco Bay Area. My storage unit...er, underground bunker...is guarded by former Spetsnaz, autonomous turrets, a laser sensing grid, and a three-headed, hungry, rabid chihauhau...so don't get any crafty ideas. Of course, this is the internet, so I offer proof of my outrageous claim... (Well, I would if the inline photo attachments would show up...grrr.) One more try... http://www.magness.org/atari815/IMG_1453.JPG http://www.magness.org/atari815/IMG_1454.JPG http://www.magness.org/atari815/IMG_1455.JPG http://www.magness.org/atari815/IMG_1457.JPG http://www.magness.org/atari815/IMG_1458.JPG http://www.magness.org/atari815/IMG_1459.JPG http://www.magness.org/atari815/IMG_1460.JPG http://www.magness.org/atari815/IMG_1461.JPG http://www.magness.org/atari815/IMG_1462.JPG Edited August 2, 2013 by bitslice2901
+Allan
Not to derail your thread but does anybody know if there ever was a manual for the 815 drive? Allan

Supergun
I thought this item was rare? Seriously, do none of the ones known to exist have serial numbers? That information would speak volumes as to rarity. Let us know if you do end up acquiring one from either of the above sources. I sure wish the things on my most wanted list were as easy to locate.
