Games That Made Use Of Analog Controls

The 5200 is often mocked for its controller, but what about the games that actually made good use of its analog capabilities? I always considered the 5200 version of Pole Position to be my favorite because of the excellent controls. Were there many other games that used the control method effectively?

Castle Crisis uses the analog to move the shields like a paddle controller.

Does Pole Position use the up and down at all? If not, then I think we found the perfect port of Pole Position... that and a modded controller to turn into a paddle controller :)

Sinistar and Centipede

Really, Sinistar? It feels to me that it's a direct port of the A8 game, with very 'digital'-feeling controls. It's difficult to do any fine movements at all. That was my understanding from the Sinistar thread as well. Don't get me wrong, it's a great game, but I think it could be a lot better with finer controls. I'm not asking to be a jerk, it just really seemed to me that Sinistar does NOT use the analog controls at all. Edited by BydoEmpire

I thought that Realsports Soccer let you run slower/faster via the analog stick but its been years since I played it. It was a neat 'extra' back in the day.

The only one that ever mattered to me was Missile Command - what GREAT pinpoint control. It makes the game so much more fun.

the big 5 are

superbreakout, missile command, gorf, kaboom, starwars arcade

choplifter, poleposition galaxian use the analogness but are playable without it

pole position uses up and down as the high low shifter

In addition to those, I'd add River Raid as it makes great use of the non-centering for speed control. :)

Super Breakout, Gyruss, and Popeye

Popeye? I was certain that Popeye was a digital-control conversion; are you sure?

Only thing I base that on is that Popeye is one of the trickier games to get to work properly when refurbing/calibrating stock 5200 controllers. For instance, even though the refurbed controllers may seem to work fine on many games, I have found them not to be capable of moving Popeye up and down stairs properly. Many times, controllers that otherwise seem fine need the potentiometers replaced solely because of Popeye. There are some weird analog things going on inside that game for sure!
