macgoo
Been away from Atari computers for a very long time but I am trying to do some top 100s for computers and obviously there are 1000s of games for these 8bit machines. The only stipulation is the games must be joystick controlled (no strategy or adventure games then)and also have a 1 player facility (so no 2 player only games please) Also please if you are going to quote another post put your game nominations at the top and your quotes and comments underneath. So if people could post their top 25 games so I could tally up a top 100 total that would be great thanks
Thorsten Günther
Do mainly joystick controlled games count? My 25 titles then would be - in no particular order: Star Raiders Rescue on Fractalus Defender Yoomp! Bandits Encounter! Boulder Dash Animal Party Fort Apocalypse Unicum Archon II: Adept M.U.L.E. Cytron Masters Cavelord Spelunker Gyruss Drol Flip and Flop Stealth The Last Starfighter Spy vs. Spy Kennedy Approach Necromancer River Raid Wizard of Wor
Mclaneinc
So we do your research for you? I presume by the wording you are doing top 100's for other machine so I also presume there are similar posts on other 8 bit sites? Sorry, feeling grumpy.. Marius
When you go to atarimania you can see a top ?? of games there. My favorite games are: Drelbs Oils Well Ocean Detox M.U.L.E. Brian R.
My favs include: PacMan Galaxian Space Invaders Lode Runner Star Wars Arcade Frogger A lot of these games are also available on the 5200 game system, and are exactly or mostly the same. (PacMan has the intermission animations on the 5200, but not on the A8 cart.) And the Activision games... River Raid, Pitfall and Kaboom are the ones I have... yes, they are good, but they're marginal upgrades from their original graphics on the 2600. Edited June 6, 2012 by Brian R. I am doing a website with covers/downloads/magazine reviews/gameplay vids etc, I could play 400 or so and pick 100 but I may miss some obvious good titles Yes other 8 bit computers will be included in time, like MSX, CPC, ZX Spectrum,TI-99, COCO/Dragon, Thomson M05, Oric, Vic20, C64. Rybags
I'll put mine in order. Rescue on Fractalus, Alternate Reality, Alternate Reality: The Dungeon, MULE, Spelunker, The Eidelon, 7 Cities of Gold, Yoomp, Koronis Rift. Boulder Dash, Star Raiders, Encounter, Archon 2, Drop Zone, Montezuma's Revenge *, Alley Cat, International Karate, Ballblazer, Bruce Lee. Nautlilus, Bounty Bob Strikes Back, Shamus, Slime, The Last Starfighter / SR 2, Donkey Kong, Necromancer, Mercenary. Note there's probably a good 4-5 post-2000 games that I should insert but TBH they don't pop into memory and aren't in the Atarimania Top 100 which I used to grab my picks. * Monty's - would have rated higher but the technical superior preview version is incomplete and the released version was cut down and just feels like a ripoff. Looking at that Top 100 from Atarimania. IMO it is a bit of a popularity thing and there's plenty of games rated way higher than they deserve and plenty more that should be in there.

snicklin
The problem with any one person answering here is that nobody knows all Atari's 8 bit games. They will then give you their best ever games in their mind which is only a subset of the whole game set. Personally I generally know the latter games that came out for the Atari. It's a bit like asking an 18 year old who the best pop star is. They'll never mention someone from the 50s. I think that the suggestion that you look at Atarimania's list is probably a wise idea. Rybags
The problem with the Atarimania list - I see 5 in the Top 20 that don't deserve that status, and probably another dozen post-2000 releases that aren't in the list, some of which would be pretty high up the list. Wrathchild
I found the 'by rating' one to be the best guide Edited June 8, 2012 by Wrathchild
macgoo
It's all just a guide really, I will be sifting through about 3000 games on 10 different machine brands/formats before I decide a list of 100 for each machine. Just thought it would be nice to hear other people's suggestions and tally them up. Once I have a shortlist of 100 games I will indeed check out Atarimania ratings at that point to see what people rate highest on my list and work from there.
