+SabertoothRetro
I'm a new poster here. I sold my Jaguar and over 30 games back in 1998. Talk about selling at the bottom of the market! Anyway, over the last year I've begun (slowly) rebuilding my collection. While re-buying my old games is a stomach churning experience ($100+ for Atari Karts, really???), I am really impressed with what I've seen of Songbird's releases. I picked up Skyhammer new from B & C and it's fantastic! I am also intrigued by the homebrew scene. For those that never left Jaguar, what are some of the best "new" Jaguar games out there? What are the must haves? Please don't say Battlesphere 'cause I don't have the cash. Thanks in advance!
+davidcalgary29
Battlesphere. It's all a matter of personal taste, of course, but I think Painter is excellent. Of course, you're going to have an incredibly tough time buying most 'modern' titles, as almost all of them were limited run releases and available now only for astronomical sums. You're going to have to frequent the forums on a regular basis (ie. daily) if you want to buy contemporary titles, such as the upcoming Impulse X. I bet that one's going to sell out in a day. Total Carnage is a recent Songbird release, and well worth the purchase price. For some reason, though, the one Songbird release that I keep coming back to is Soccer Kid. Gunstar
There are a few limited release titles missing from that list, like American Hero interactive movie (soft-porn) demo/alpha/beta, and 'The Cave' a similair demo (not soft porn). Also there was a limited release of Fight for Life Beta on cartridge. B&C also has Jaguar Hocky on cartridge, and there are a few other limited run items I think. Video61 may carry some unique things too, they have some public-domain movies on Jaguar Cinepak CD's for sale. +SabertoothRetro
Thanks for the input. @davidcalgary29 - LOL! I guess I opened myself up for the Battlesphere bit. . I may try Protector SE and Soccer Kid, the latter of which I enjoyed on 3do back in the day. @twoquickcapri - That's quite a list. Between rebuying the "old" favorites and getting some more recent titles I guess that I have my collecting cut out for me! @Gunstar - How is Fight for Life Beta? The original isn't something that I'm looking to add back to the quiver unless I can get it for a steal.
Gunstar
Too Beta or not too Beta, that is the question: answers below (want a can of worms, you got one) Well, the beta is different enough that it's really a different game, and that's more literal than you may know. The game was being developed by High Voltage Software, nearly complete, and pretty good too, but got some bad reviews by biased rags, mainly tearing on the graphics for looking like Lincoln logs and such. So, in Atari's wisdom (that wisdom with such a pitiful track record), they brought the project in-house, and completely re-wrote it with one of the programmers from the Sega Virtua Fighter team, and new artists, and they made it look a whole lot better, unfortunately it's slower and the controls are hard to master (mostly timing). So many say the Beta is a better game (game-play wise), and essentially a different game. But that's not even the real kicker! The real kicker is that there was a screw up in the end, at Atari, intential or not, but FFL was the last game Atari was having made into cartridges, and the rom image sent for manufacturing is an earlier beta, and the final, much better version that was supposed to go to manufacturing. The real final version is still out there somewhere and has never been released! Said to be better than both the versions available now. There's a lot of reasons to believe this is more than just a rumor too, the source is someone who worked on the FFL project, this was supposed to be Atari's flagship game at the time, they poured more resources into it than any other software project, and became their swan-song, they wanted to go out with a flash instead of a wimper. They had every intention of this being a very finished, polished, playable game. But the real swan-swong for Atari has never been played. It's on a hard drive or flashcartridge somewhere or lost forever even by now. The released cartridge is easy to tell it's a beta too, there are some blatant mistakes that would have been found and dealt with, for instance, shoe lace textures facing horizontally instead of vertically, and other textures not oriented correctly, There's a high score table/screen, but the game doesn't keep a score! And a lot of other things too. Edited July 20, 2012 by Gunstar
Gunstar
Back on topic, Songbird's releases, overall, are the best post-Telegames. maybe even including Telegames, as far as content, but definately surpasses is package, manual and label catagories, but then Telegames is at the bottom of the heap in presentation. The best single release overall was of course Battlesphere. There are other releases that run the full range, from B&C's generic releases to ones with the same quality as original Atari releases, and that's not limited to packaging, that includes the possibility of a good or bad game too.
