Regular joystick didn't work with the Atari but I managed to play in stella and everything went well. 25 laps for default game mode and B/B difficulties. If you have a stelladaptor, you can use a regular joystick with the emulator. Works pretty well, but I wonder how much better the driving controllers are in comparison. Is there an option that activates the joystick? You press tab to show the menu then go to game properties. And you select driving controllers in the controller tab.
