+karri
Here is the final version of a new Atari Lynx rogue-like game. Shaken, not stirred The mission, should you choose to accept it, is to preserve World peace by disarming a ticking bomb. Unfortunately the location of the bomb as well as the instructions of how to disarm it is not known. The bad guys are not too happy about your interaction with their plans. The gals on the other hand may, or may not help you. The controls are simple. You use only the joypad and two fire buttons throughout the game. countdown Keep track of where you have been health BioScan is a new invention by K. Careful - don't break it. Find the bomb and disarm it. You got about 10 minutes. Dismissed Build up your strength by single targets before going in for larger mobs. The code of the game is only 64k. Here is two versions available 128k rom and 256k rom with appropriate block sizes. The content is the same in both. This entry was created as part of the 7 day rogue-like challenge. The game is free. You can make carts of it if you like or copy it to your tablet or phone or whatever. shaken128k.zip shaken256k.zip Edited March 14, 2014 by karri

108 Stars
Great that you managed to finish it so quickly.^^ A minor spelling error occured to me; it says "preserver" in the intro in-game. Beside that... love the Axel F. music. For the game itself, I would like some more detailed instructions. It certainly doesn't seem to be a roguelike at all.^^ So far I randomly click on the map and bioscan, and then I click on enemies appearing. How do I find the bomb? Just by chance? I expected green dots marking civilians, and red ones marking enemies, but when I entered an area with a green dot there were like 5 or 6 enemies. +karri
Thanks. Ok. Here is a small set of instructions: World Map: - the tiny grey dots = uncharted zones - middle size grey box = charted zone with nothing of interest - large grey box = special area containing a girl (and probably also enemies and eventually a bomb) - large red box = zone containing enemies. A = enter zone B = nothing Hint: Penny is your trusted friend. Bio Scan: Developing an advanced zone scanner for remote weapon detector took most of the budget for this project. Use it carefully so you don't break it. Within the scanned zone - red dots are armed characters - green dots are unarmed characters The idea here is to develop your tactics. It takes around 15 secs to run from one end of the room to the other. Choose wisely where to enter the area. When entering you automatically trigger all alarms and people start running towards you. A = enter area B = go back to World Map Area view: A = shoot B = use TNT for area damage If no enemies are visible B = Menu If a girl is visible you have a healing option Love = heals you to maximum health and also heals the girl. Love is always a good thing. Making Love while enemies are present is not a good thing. It ruins the mood. In only one place of the game you have an option Bomb visible. Clicking on this moves you into disarm mode. Once the bomb is disarmed you have won the game. Congratulations!!!!! Tactics: Your character is very weak at the start. Defeating enemies increases your expertise (firepower) and stamina (health) very fast. TNT packages are only looted by defeating enemies in Red zones. Same is through for other things like martinis (health boost) and nightsight. Oh, half way through the game the sun will set and outside becomes dark. A night sight may help you. The only thing missing from "roguelike" is that this is real-time action and not turn based. But the area is randomly generated. The main character can die permanently. There is many ways to finish the game. You do not have to kill everyone. Thanks for the spelling correction. It does not enter the original game anymore because the time is up for me already. I also spotted another small error in the ending. But these are just cosmetic details. In any case I made "corrected" versions also: Thanks for all the positive feedback shaken.zip shaken256k.zip shaken128k.zip Edited March 15, 2014 by karri
+TrekMD
I've created a PDF with the instructions for the game and I've had Karri take a look to be sure it was all OK. I'm attaching it for anyone who may want it. Shaken, not stirred - Atari Lynx Instructions.pdf
walter_J64bit
Found the bomb, I dint have any luck with it. I didn't find the instructions to disarmed, having fun with the game.

The main character can die permanently. There is many ways to finish the game. You do not have to kill everyone. Maybe I put the term "roguelike" to strict. For me a roguelike always was a dungeon crawler from top-down perspective, with turn based movement, permanent deaths and looting items to get better equipment. But maybe people view roguelikes differently nowadays. Anyway, thanks for the instructions, and congrats for creating such a unique game for the Lynx so quickly! +karri
Thank you for the nice words. And to walter_J64bit: great job of finding the bomb. Sometimes when I was playtesting this the bomb detonated before I had time to disarm it. Perhaps 10 minutes is too short - for old timers. On the other hand my son did it in 6 minutes 24 secs on a real Lynx and said. Nice game. So perhaps the 10 minutes is too long - for kids. +karri
Hi guys, the feedback at the 7drl was pretty clear - keep the game mechanism clear and tie the different parts to each other better. I intend to do this. But in case you are frustrated already here is the point of the game: The idea was that the gamer finds out that there is a girl in every main location (Garage, Warehouse, Casino, Spa).By combining healing, area damage and single target damage you can save the girl and kill the baddies. The girl will then reveal a part of the instructions of how to disarm the bomb.Penny, is in your own team. She works as a healing spot. She will also tell if one of the girls is lying.By combining the five clues you get three things you should do and one thing you should not do to disarm the bomb. The tacts for saving the girl is by entering the area either to the girl, heal the girl by choosing Love. And then nuke the baddies.Or enter area far from the girl and nuke the baddies before the girl enters. In the version attached I have tried to add explanations and take away the frustrating parts of the game. There will still be later releases where I try to tie the game views together somehow (World Map - Bio Scan - Area View) -- Karri shaken-2014-03-29.zip

+karri
Here is a greatly improved version of "Shaken, not stirred". The menu system is gone. In order to heal yourself target the girl. When the cursor changes from a crosshair to a heart you can have your little love affair. In order to disarm the bomb you just target the bomb with the crosshair and press FIRE. That will put you in disarm mode. Loot pickup is now automatic once the enemies are down. -- Karri shaken.zip

+karri
Hi Guys, I am a bit interested in feedback of this kind of gaming style. Do you feel that your own shooting needs some visuals or sounds? What about enemies shooting? What kind of graphics or effects should there be? Can you recognize the girl? Right now the girl takes damage just like the villains. Should the girl be painted in different colour? I also added 5 TNT grenades at the start so you can use AOE from beginning. Is this too easy now? Should there be some visual clue of how many TNT's are left? What about shooting? Now you shoot constantly as long as the trigger is pressed. Should there be machine gun sounds to indicate this? Other comments that bothers you or suggestions in how to improve on game play. Oh, and refer to the latest version that has most silly bugs fixed. Included here for two cart sizes. -- Karri shaken128.zip shaken256.zip Edited April 16, 2014 by karri
+karri
The downloads in the previous mail are broken I cannot change them as "You don't have permission to do that" Sorry. I will fix this soon.
+karri
Here is a screenshot showing a girl and a villain. Sometimes when you have lots of action it may be diffecult to protect the girl. One bad guy is just behind the girl. So you need to aim a bit.
+karri
Ok. Here are the working 128k and 256k versions. The previous post was compiled with the wrong compiler. I also tried a changed colour scheme for the girl. As it looks better it can be as this. shaken128.zip shaken256.zip
