The Official NEO-GEO Thread!

Hey , you guys seem to be the experts on all things Neo Geo so I had a couple of questions. I am thinking about getting either an Aes or Neo Geo CD system in the near future.

 

I was wondering if the controllers are interchangeable between the two systems or do they both have different kind of controller ports? I think I would like to play some of the games with the pad that comes with the CD system but would they work on the aes? How about the Neo Geo x controllers? Would those work on an Aes?

 

Also are there any downsides about getting a Japanese Aes system? I figure they should be pretty easy to play even if the menus are in Japanese since they are arcade style games and not text heavy. Is there a way to change the menus into English?

Hi Alex,

 

Yes the controllers are interchangeable. It just a matter of your preference on how you like to play. Either arcade style or in hand style. As for Neo-Geo X controllers it won't work because of the slots to insert into the unit are different. I personally would stick to the original than the Tommo versions because the NGX versions (IMO) are cheaply made.

 

As for the Japanese AES units, you shouldn't have a problem playing them. You might want to get a converter due to the Japanese adapter. To play with English text, modding the system is the best bet using a UniBios.

Might take me a couple weeks to set money aside for it but I think I would like to get one. I've wanted it for a long time now. Even if I can't afford the more expensive games I would love to be able to play Magician Lord and Baseball Stars on the original hardware in my home.

Hi Alex,

 

Somewhere around $230-$290.To get you a nice unit to start off. I'll provide a link to "hit-japan", a top rated seller on Ebay which I purchased many systems and games in the past!

 

Here's one that I would recommend for you to start with. The serial number is low and early motherboard revisions contain daughterboards used to enhance the clarity of the video output.

 

They do have others that are cheaper, but I thought this was the best choice at a good price.

fdurso224's AES advice is solid, correct, and exactly what you asked for, but I notice you seem a bit concerned with game prices, which is why I (a neo geo cheapskate) bring up the Omega. If you've already considered it and are set on the AES, feel free to ignore me because AES is awesome. But with the exception of a couple early titles, MVS games are generally much less expensive than their AES counterparts, and every bit as good. I even prefer MVS, because of the 'real arcade' aspect, and the MVS-exclusive games.

 

As far as consolized MVS units go, the Omega is a shockingly good deal for what it is. It costs more than an AES, but you'll probably make up that difference by about game purchase #3. Most of the MVS library can still be had for under $50/each (loose). On my last pickup (a five game lot), I averaged ~$14 each including shipping.

Thanks for the info. You guys have been very helpful. I've never read about the Omega until now. It looks like quite a nice machine. And I knew Mvs games were cheaper than Aes but didn't realize they were quite that cheap.

 

The superficial part of me still kind of wants an Aes because of how awesome the games themselves look. I have never seen or held an Aes cartridge in real life and it would be pretty cool to even own a couple of them. However the consolized Mvs does sound like a more practical solution. I'm still on the fence about it.

 

Don't they also make a Mvs convertor for the Aes? I could be wrong but it would be cool if you could play both types of games on one unit.

Yep, that's another way to go, but they aren't cheap. The lowest I see on ebay right now is $449, the others seem to be $650+. I'm sure I've seen them for less, but I want to say the least I've seen them go for is $250. (granted I am mvs-only and don't pay much attention to their prices)

 

I don't think compatibility ever quite reached 100% on them either, but it's close.

Reaperman's advice is spot on and 100% correct on what he mentioned. If your looking for an alternate . The Omega might be up your ally. Its a well respected machine and has everything that's necessary for your gaming pleasure. This unit has been on my want list and worth acquiring. He already gave informative info on the CMVS route. Now you have insight on both ends on the CMVS and AES options available to you Alex.

if you like, another option for the MVS/AES is modding the AES to HDMI. The MVS route is cheaper of course. Here are two auctions that have them complete already.

 

Unfortunately, the AES auction is almost $1,000 dollars. Well past the budget. But its worth to give you an idea how it looks!

NeoGeoCDWorld: Merci de nous accorder un peu de ton temps. Beaucoup de personnes te connaissent à travers ton travail pour le jeu Knight Chance de Jeff Kurtz. Peux-tu te présenter ?

Tim Jonsson: Je m'appelle Tim Jonsson, je suis graphiste free-lance dans de l'industrie du jeu vidéo.

 

NGCDW: Sur ta page Deviant Art tu as écrit que ta plate-forme de jeu préféré est la Neo Geo. Qu'est ce que tu aimes dans celle-ci ?

TJ: Ce que je préfère dans la console NeoGeo, c'est la qualité du rendu graphique. C'est un référence majeure en matière de performance graphique. Et en tant que graphiste, les possibilités en terme de création sont illimitées. C'est donc un vrai plaisir de faire du dessin pour ce système. Et en plus je suis un grand fan de la NeoGeo en général.

 

NGCDW: Quelle est ton expérience avec cette console ? Quel est ton jeu favoris ?

TJ: En fait je me suis mis à la NeoGeo assez tardivement. J'avais entendu parler de la NeoGeo dans des magazines spécialisés et de temps à autre il m'était arrivé de tomber sur de vieilles bornes d'arcades dans des hôtels. Cependant jamais en tant qu'enfant je ne m'y étais intéressé. Cela aurait été différent si j'avais su qu'il y avait des consoles. Plus tard, quand j'ai découvert qu'il existait ce type de système en surfant sur le net, cela m'a vraiment intrigué. En 2005, j'ai acheté un système AES avec un SS2 et un FFS et un AOF2. Après ça j'étais complètement accro et quelques années après j'ai acheté une borne MVSU4. Mes jeux favoris sont Puzzle Bobble, Neo Turf Masters, Samurai Shodown 2….et encore beaucoup d'autres.

 

NGCDW: Pourquoi avoir travaillé avec Jeff Kurtz ? Qu'as-tu aimé dans ce projet ?

TJ: Jeff m'a contacté pour la première fois sur un forum de neogeo.com et il m'a demandé si je voulais venir travailler sur un jeu NeoGeo avec lui. A ma connaissance il n'y avait que NG:DEV qui produisait de nouveaux jeux pour ce système. J'ai trouvé ça très intéressant. Faire partie d'un projet original comme celui-ci. Je savais que Jeff avait une excellente réputation au sein de la communauté de la NeoGeo. Ça m'a encore plus intéressé. Jeff n'avait pas l'intention de produire un jeu de tir de vaisseaux spatiaux ou ce genre de choses mais quelque chose de plus léger et d'unique pour le système qui pourrait être produit relativement rapidement et par un amateur. J'ai aimé ce projet car il m'a procuré beaucoup de liberté artistique.

 

NGCDW: Comment travailles tu sur la NeoGeo ? Quels sont les logiciels que tu utilises ?

TJ: En gros j'ai utilisé Photoshop et une tablette graphique Wacom pour toutes les images. J'utilise aussi Graphicale que j'ai utilisé pour exporter les spritesheets (NDR : les animations décomposées sur une seule image) et pour l'optimisation des palettes . C'est tout.

 

NGCDW: As-tu eu des contraintes techniques sur la console NeoGeo ? Par exemple, les tuiles de 16X16, la limitation de couleur ? Comment as-tu résolu ces problèmes ?

TJ: Bien entendu j'ai dû me plier à quelques contraintes techniques comme seize couleurs par tuile. Pour contourner cette difficulté j'ai parfois divisé des sprites en plusieurs couches (NDR : ce qui revient à superposé plusieurs sprites pour un même dessin). Ce qui m'a permis de donner davantage de couleurs à certaines scènes.

 

NGCDW: Sur tes futurs jeux neo geo, Jeff Kurtz, dans une interview sur culturaneogeo.com, parle d'un jeu d'action qui mixe science et moyen âge. On a vu des essais sur Devian Art. Peux-tu nous donner plus de détail sur ce projet ?

TJ: Nous avons évoqué plusieurs autres idées pour un nouveau jeu NeoGeo. On en est vraiment à l'étape préliminaire donc rien n'a été décidé jusqu'à maintenant.

 

NGCDW: Pourrais-tu être intéressé par d'autre projet sur neo geo ?

TJ: Mais bien sûr d'ailleurs il se peut bien qu'on soit sur un nouveau projet.

 

NGCDW: Tu as travaillé pour Watermelon et son projet Y, qu'as tu fais sur ce projet ?

TJ: Pour le projet Y, j'étais responsable du décor des différents niveaux et de quelques animations.

 

NGCDW: Pour quel type de jeu voudrais-tu travailler ?

TJ: Je n'ai pas beaucoup d'a priori sur le type de jeux sur lesquels je voudrais travailler tant que c'est de la basse résolution ou qu'il s'agit d'un système rétro. C'est ça qui m'intéresse.

 

NGCDW: Es-tu intéressé par une machine spécifique ?

TJ: En fait le NeoGeo est une machine que j'aimerais explorer davantage. C'est un système où de nombreux genres n'ont pas encore été exploités. Je voudrais contribuer à développer ces nouveaux genres. Si tu regardes la collection de jeux disponibles sur SuperNintendo ou sur MegaDrive, il ne reste plus grand-chose à développer. Tout a déjà été fait.

 

NGCDW:Qu'elles sont tes influences en pixel art ? Les sprites de capcom ou d'un autre développeur japonais t'ont-ils influencé ?

TJ: Je suis influencé par le graphisme japonais en général. Je ne peux pas dire qu'une personne en particulier m'a influencé. Tel que je vois les choses, il y a deux styles graphiques. Le style occidental et le style japonais. J'essaie d'éviter le style occidental parce que je trouve qu'il ne colle pas très bien avec la plate-forme NeoGeo. Le style occidental tend à être plus neutre, cartoon et anti-aliasing alors que le style japonais est plus dur sur le rendu des pixels (NDR : les graphistes japonais donnent un contour noir plus marqué à leurs sprites alors que les occidentaux vont les lisser avec des dégradés). Il reste une trace du style occidental dans mon travail, que j'essaie d'éliminer autant que possible.

 

NGCDW: Qu'aimes-tu dans le retrogaming ?

TJ: Vous ne serez pas surpris d'apprendre que j'adore les jeux rétro par nostalgie. Mais ce que j'aime bien dans les jeux modernes, c'est le côté instantané de la chose. Le jeu a changé et je n'aime pas trop la tournure qu'il prend en ce moment. C'est pour ça que je suis content qu'il y ait ces développeurs qui concentrent encore leurs efforts sur de vieilles machines et qu'il y ait une communauté très active de passionnés qui s'intéresse aux jeux rétro.

Tim Jonsson: My name is Tim Jonsson. I’m a graphics artist who’s currently living my life as a freelancer within the gaming industry


NGCDW: On your deviantart page, you wrote that your favorite gaming platform is Neo•Geo. What do you like about Neo•Geo?
TJ: What I like the most about NEOGEO is the impressive visuals. It’s a powerhouse when it comes to graphical performance and as a pixel artist there’s not much there to limit you in terms of what you want to create. So it’s a real pleasure to make graphics for this system, not to mention I’m a big neo geo fan in general. This is why neo geo gets me excited!

NGCDW: What are your experiences with this console? Your favorites games ?
TJ: I actually got into the neo geo quite late. The neo geo was something I would read about in magazines and occasionally stumble upon in hotels where they had old JK cabinets. However it really never caught my attention as a kid. It might’ve been different had I known there was home console systems back then. Later when I actually discovered these systems while browsing the internet I got very intrigued. In 2005 I bought an AES system along with SS2, FFS and AoF2 after that I was hooked and several years later I ended up with a MVSU4 cab. My favorite games are Puzzle Bobble, Neo Turf Masters, Samurai Shodown 2 and maaaany more J.

NGCDW: Why work with Jeff Kurtz? What do you like in this project?
TJ: It started with Jeff reaching out to me on the neo-geo.com forums asking if I would like to work on a neo geo game with him. To my knowledge there was only NG:DEV producing new games for the system and so this got me quite interested -- to be part in an unusual project such as this. I knew Jeff was someone with a very high reputation in the neo geo scene and this got me even more excited.
Jeff wasn’t going for a spaceship shooter or anything of that kind but something lighter and unique for the system that could be produced in a timely manner on a hobby commitment. I enjoyed this project since it gave me a lot of artistic freedom

NGCDW: How do you work on Neo•Geo ? What tools do you use? What is your favorite software?
TJ: I basically use photshop and a Wacom for making all the graphics. There’s also graphics gale which I use for exporting spritesheets and then Pro Motion for optimizing palettes. That’s pretty much it.

NGCDW: Have you found any contraints with the Neo•Geo hardware? For example, the 16x16 tiles? The limited colors? Some people who tried to convert their artwork have problem obtaining more than 16 colors per tile. How do you circumvent this problem?
TJ: Of course there’s some restrictions that I had to keep in mind, mainly the 16 color per tile limit. To work around the color limitation I sometimes divided sprites into separate layers and this allowed certain scenes to have more colors.

NGCDW: About your future neo geo game, Jeff Kurtz spoke ( interview on culturaneogeo.com ) about "an action game that mixes science fiction with medieval era". We see yours ideas mockup on your deviantart.
TJ: We have discussed several different ideas for another neo geo game. It’s very early thought so right now nothing has been decided.


NGCDW:Could you be interested in some other projects on Neo•Geo?
TJ: Of course, in fact something may already be in the works

NGCDW: You're now working for Watermelon, and Project Y, what do you do on that project?
TJ: In projectY I was responsible for level backgrounds and some animation work

NGCDW: For what kind of game do you like to make the drawings/graphics?
TJ: I don’t have a very restricted taste in terms of what genre of games I want to work on. As long as it’s low-res and/or developed for a retro system – this is what gets me most excited.

NGCDW:Are you interested in specific hardware?
TJ: Well actually the neo geo is a hardware I would like to keep exploring, it’s a system that is still lacking many genres of games. I wish to be part in filling that void of certain genres. If you look at the Super Nintendo or Megadrive library there is not much else to be wished for there’s already a lot of variety.

NGCDW:What is your style of pixel art influence ? Capcom sprite style or another japanese developer style ?
TJ: I’m influenced by Japanese pixel art in general. I can’t say I’m influenced by/or favor one specific developer. In my world there are two pixel art styles, there’s the western/Euro and the Japanese style. I try to avoid the western look as I don’t think it goes very well on the neo geo platform. Western pixel art tend to be very soft, cartoony and anti aliased looking whereas the Japanese use “harder” looking pixels. I can definitely still see a bit of western essence in my own work, this is something I’m trying to eliminate as much as possible.

NGCDW: What do you like about retrogaming?
TJ: Not so surprisingly there’s a lot of nostalgia behind my love for retrogaming but it’s also the quick pick-up and play gameplay that I prefer over many modern games. Gaming has changed in a way that has put me off a little.I’m therefor happy that we have these developers who’re still focusing on the old hardwares along with a retro community that is going strong!

This morning, were with a gentleman named, "markhorsburgh". This good fellow is a Neo-Geo enthusiast that's will take the time and discuss in his video about Neo-Geo Shumps and his subjective view on them. Great upload to say the least.

I'm terrible at fighting games. I've tried to improve myself numerous times but I've never really committed myself properly. This time around, I'm hitting it a little harder and have even started watching youtube videos on the subject.

 

I've chosen a single character to focus on--Bonne Jenet from Garou: Mark of the Wolves. I chose her for her anti-air abilities, and for her pretty easy to remember moves--most of which are quarter-circle based.

 

The goal is simple. I want to be able to *easily* get up to the final boss on difficulty level 4 (MVS default) with a single credit, and want to be able to beat him somewhat regularly. No cheaty continue services or character changes.

 

I've been memorizing my moves, and even had a two-sided reference card made up for myself. In an absolute first for me, today I switched the unibios over to AES mode so I could utilize the surprisingly robust practice mode. Practice mode has already taught me to slow down my inputs when performing her supers. I'm pretty sure that other games with the same inputs (KOF 99's Mai) let me do the qcf-qcf moves quicker.

Garou: Mark of the Wolves was never my strong point in fighting games. I had a tough time getting use to the controls for it. Mostly FF 1, 2, Special, 3 were my best in SNK fighters.

Hi guys,

 

Hope you all enjoyed your 4th of July with family, friends, eats, and video games.

 

This morning, will be back listening to Neo-Geo soundtracks. Here, we have a song from KOF '99 called, "176th Street". Love enjoying the piano tune in the beginning and that slick NYC saxophone notes. The later soundtracks for the Neo-Geo show how the Yamaha YM2610 is certainly not an obsolete chip. Even to this day, it still continues to provide excellent quality music for a 25+ year platform for Neobitz, NGDEVTEAM, and other independent developers for the units.
