+warerat
By software, I mean the firmware. I'm assuming you've got the drive jumpered and terminated correctly as it appears the ICD formatter started. Also make sure the "P" jumper is off (this disables parity). I don't suggest running any of the old ICD HDFMTPHX for this, but that is my opinion based on looking inside on how the defect list is handled. I'd trust the format if done from a PC-based SCSI host adapter. If you're sure the media is good and if the block size is 256, then the usable sectors are 0-173399, if it's 512 you should be able to use 0-86699 at half capacity. Naturally on the Atari you'd start with sector 1. One day I'll finish my MIO APT-compliant firmware but don't expect it to be remotely compatible with any of the original configs. 1050
There is a lot of generalization, speculation, and misinformation here on how the MIO operates. There sure is, thanks for setting us straight. I stand corrected several times. These collected recollections go back 20 some years when I was having similar 'not working here' issues with the black box. No surprise to me they are outdated impressions at best. I never could get a decent error return that led me to ANY kind of knowledge as to what might possibly be wrong on the Atari. Only on the PC did I find bad cartridges and get a proper format done on the good cartridges I did have. I believe that MacRorie states in PM he is entering 0 for the starting sector which might be a problem then if it's used for holding config data. I assume then 1-65536 for first 16 meg partition and then 65537-131072 for 2nd, etc. Then the config information would have a chance to be saved and restored at the next boot. But these numbers are only valid for 256 byte sectors, I believe the cart comes with 512 byte sectors, again IIRC, and by now we all know pretty much just how much that is worth - right? And if Atari based sector numbering is used then 2-65537, 65538-131073, etc. We'll bit bang it till it works - this part we good at.
+MacRorie
Thanks to 1050, I had some known good 200MB carts to try out on the drive/MIO combo. Neither worked. I have to assume either the drive is bad or the MIO is bad. I am not sure what else to think (or try) for the matter. Thanks for all the help, though. -Mac
