jwild
********************************************************************************* ****************************************************************************************************************************************************************** TI-99/4A High Score Challenge Month: June 2017 Game: Defender One of my favorite games of all time, although I never played the TI version until recently. It is a pretty good version. I don't mean to inflict any damage on anyone's shooting thumb, but this game might test your rapid fire fingers. Good Luck everyone!! ******************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************

globeron
I guess I'll start by setting the bar very low. Def01.png My bar is lower was waiting in a Telco shop and tried playing on another iPad pro with js99er very hard to move. But this Land rover Defender was parked in front of our apartment.

globeron
Awesome prize!!!Hi Opry99er I am just thinking out loud. Maybe you can send the prize of Henhouse to jwild? (I am in Asia and it is too expensive to ship around up and down) also I do not have so much TI-stuff here, kind of bare minimum (and limited space to store) I bought some equipment from US with expensive shipment costs. Next 3 weeks I am travelling/flying to Europe so have to 'defend' myself in the air and do not have the Sony PSP TI 99 Sim with me...will try once in a while on a laptop with classic99

+mizapf
Remember to save your overkill bombs (Space key) for situations with many enemies on the screen, don't shoot the people, pick them up when falling. Apart from that, I was just playing with a joystick, and I think it was about 6 waves.
+InsaneMultitasker
This was the first game to 'force' me into moving the TI console to the floor. I used my foot to press the spacebar so that I wouldn't have to take my hand away from the joystick.
jwild
Did you know? Large asteroids, an element from Asteroids, were added to the Defender game world, but were later removed because the staff felt it lacked enjoyment. This reminds me of another TI classic... 10, 9, 8, 7...... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
jwild
Did you know? Defender's development was led by Eugene Jarvis, a pinball programmer at Williams. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
jwild
Did you know? I have a goal to have at least 10 people post their high scores this month! Do not feel like you have to beat the current high score... just post your personal best as you play through the month. jwild
Did you know? Williams was preparing for the AMOA show. They put many programmers on the project to be ready for the show. The display model featured five levels, which the team felt was more than enough because of the game's difficulty. Most Williams employees could not progress past the third level and Jarvis's score of 60,000 points seemed unbeatable to them. Sinphaltimus
You guys better hope I never win one of these. If I do, I'm picking from our home brew collection. Like Snake Plissken or Wizard's Doom. Something no one has 30 plus years experience playing.

I gave it a spin previously, but only got somewhere between 11,000 and 12,000. Will give it another go later. It was actually more fun playing than I remembered.
jwild
Did you know? Defender eventually became Williams' best selling arcade game, with over 55,000 units sold worldwide. By 2004, the game was a popular collector's item; the upright cabinets were common, while the cocktail models were more rare. Since its release, it has become one of the highest grossing arcade games ever, earning over US$1 billion Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

jwild
Awesome scores! Breaking 100k! Did you know? Atarisoft was a brand name used by Atari, Inc in 1983 and 1984 to market video games they published for home systems made by their competitors. Each platform had a specific color attributed by Atarisoft for its game packages. For example, video games sold for the Commodore 64 came up in green packages, games for the Texas Instruments TI-99/4A in yellow, games for the IBM PC in blue, and so on. Despite being in existence for less than two years, Atarisoft had a huge video game library with dozens of game versions being released for various home computers and consoles. Almost all of the Atarisoft titles were produced by third-party software companies, as Atari only developed for their own systems. +mizapf
OK, here's a video again ... unfortunately, the simplescreenrecorder crashed in the previous attempt which brought me a 100K+ high score, so I tried again, but did not reach that high.
jwild
A video of the game play! That's awesome! I had to try it. Playing with an emulator (Classic99), and recording with the Xbox app built into Windows 10. Uploaded to YouTube. I hope this works! jwild
Did you know? Competitive scoring for Defender first began when Mario Suarez from Atlantic City played Defender for over 21 and half hours in 1982 at the Claridge Casino Hotel in Atlantic City, NJ. The game later became the focus of the first Twin Galaxies video game contest in which players in 32 cities simultaneously competed on the weekend of April 3–4, 1982. Rick Smith won the contest with a score of 33,013,200 which took 38 hours. Has to make you wonder how the basic necessities were taken care of during that 38 hours..... +mizapf
A video of the game play! That's awesome! I suggested some time ago that people should be encouraged in this competition to record their game play and to publish it, in particular for those who were less lucky at that game.
