+wongojack
Since the A8 and C64 are mentioned, I figure it's safe to include this one (my personal favorite home version): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9vWQunv7e2M The archive for it is on this page: http://www.blitter.com/~nebulous/amiga-games01.html Written in BlitzBasic! I know about that language. That means you could probably do a Windows port of that version fairly easily.

AtariLeaf
I'd go with the 400/800/5200 version as well. That Amiga version looks and sounds almost perfect, very nice. Although not a great port, I used to enjoy Planet Invasion on the Tandy Coco a lot back in the day

Tempest
I grew up with the Atari 8-bit version so that's my favorite. Personally I always loved the sounds, I wouldn't call them weak. The 2600 version wasn't too bad once you got past its limitations, it had its charm.

It's pretty amazing.
Nebulon
Since we're talking about Defender (a scrolling game), you might enjoy this: https://archive.org/stream/ataribooks-atari-graphics-and-arcade-game-design/atarigraphicsandarcadegamedesign#page/n225/mode/2up
Tempest
I was really impressed by the Atari 2600 version of Stargate/Defender II. It's pretty amazing. Yeah that and Solaris are always the two 'go to' games that people use when they want to prove the 2600 was capable of amazing graphics. They really could be mistaken for 8-bit titles.
Lost Dragon
I also like to point folks in the direction of this little gem, when they think they've seen everything the 2600 had to offer: http://www.google.co.uk/url?q=https://www.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3Duc-F32oL_0U&sa=U&ved=0ahUKEwio0umc2MXMAhUnJsAKHSgRBxEQtwIIFTAA&usg=AFQjCNGKFvzXzzQZsALf4-LDsAFB6sM9gw

Atari. 2600. Game. Evarr!! So much detail and control for a 4-bit game..." People still think that the 2600 is a 4-bit system.

Flojomojo
I grew up on the VCS That sounds very uncomfortable. I'll bet you still have lines on your back.
Flojomojo
One of the Youtube comments: "Favorite. Atari. 2600. Game. Evarr!! So much detail and control for a 4-bit game..." People still think that the 2600 is a 4-bit system. Some people, anyway. Their logic almost makes sense ... NES was 8-bit, which came after Atari 2600, and 16-bit Genesis came after NES. X-bit, 8-bit, 16-bit ... the Atari must be 4-bit! What really puts sand in my shorts is the "special usage" for videogames of "second party." Ugghhh. Controls feel "right". There is a Defender clone that I absolutely love on the Amiga, it's called Oblivion. Quite often I find myself firing up the old Amiga just to have a blast. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g79ujxqUdPg
