BurritoBeans
Commodore 64: Project Firestart - 300 minutes Arcade Frogger - 20 minutes Strikers 1945 III - 10 minutes PC (DOS) I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream - 650 minutes PC (Windows) Harvester - 350 minutes PC-9801 Steam-Heart's - 50 minutes Sega Saturn: Robotica - 140 minutes Simcity 2000 - 60 minutes Steam-Heart's - 50 minutes Well, I forgot about War of the Dead 2 but I got the rest of my games in at least. To start off the week, I ran through Project Firestart. I don't really know what to say about the game... ever watch Aliens? It's pretty much Aliens. The game has a hell of a lot of blood for a C64 game, it's got aliens, and it's got horror stuff. Just picture Aliens. Alright, onto I Have No Mouth. This was more interesting to me, and I ended up buying a copy on Steam because my disc copy is a bit "eh" at best so I'd like to keep it from going worse. Pretty much you play as the five humans who weren't killed by a supercomputer - AM - which turned sentient and took over other supercomputers in Russia and China, causing it to gain the ability to wipe out most-all of humanity and torture five people for 109 years. You have to prove that humanity is better than the machines though your ability to redeem yourself, and it's actually really interesting. It's a point-and-click/puzzle/psychological horror game which I enjoy a good bit. My main issue is well, I got a bit lost and some of the animation is really silly to put it best but still, that's minor complaints as it's an adventure game - you get lost - and of course animation looks worse now. Still, I liked the short story so this was enjoyable and I'd recommend it. I threw another horror-ish game into the mix, Harvester. Harvester is just cheesy... yeah, that's about it. You're a guy, Steve, in the town of Harvest which is pretty screwed up already and you have to do a bunch of stuff to join this lodge thing which does evil stuff to people and all that. Really, I have no idea what to say about this one other than it's your usual point-and-click until you hit the lodge and it just turns into crap from there - for a few dollars it's worth it if you want something really strange/gory/bad, but I wouldn't say to go out of your way and get it - that's what I Have No Mouth is for. Fun news for me, I got a Sega Saturn again! I had a nice modded one a while back but the drive started going horrible on it so I sold it off as it was before I knew how to fix that kind of stuff along with all my US titles. I kept all my imports as I thought maybe someday I'd get another Saturn though and I really don't want to pay shipping again on that stuff, and I'm glad I followed through with that thought. I got it with SimCity 2000 and Robotica as I wanted to try some new stuff, $70 in total for a system/controllers/hookups/games, so I like that. Robotica is alright I guess... it's kinda DOOM/Wolfenstein 3D like as you just go through the floor and have to find a key to advance on a level really - nothing exactly impressive or advanced but it's fun for a quick round or two. Simcity is Simcity - I mean it plays just like the PC version except with a gamepad and some minor changes which don't bother me, my only issue is that since my save space on my cartridge is full I'm kinda screwed and can only keep one city at a time. Also, I ended up playing Steam-Heart's. This is one of those PC-98 ports to PC Engine/Saturn that was done (YU-NO is another like this.) Of course they had to censor the title, the PC-98 original contains a good bit of sexual content, but in the end I was impressed as it's a bit nicer playing the game itself (a scrolling shooter) with a gamepad that's quality instead of the crap ones I have for my PC-98. Finally, I played some arcade stuff. Frogger and Strikers were just demos as I had a friend over, and while helping him throw together his new gaming PC I played him at a few games on the arcade. Fun news with the arcade by the way, we ended up pulling a Mini ITX board with some RAM and ordered up a case, PSU, video card, etc. for it to run Hyperspin inside the thing so we're all happy, we'll have games and all that to play on the arcade. Well, happy new year and all that - 3:30AM on New Year's Eve as of posting anyways. Have fun.

I love this version of the game even with the TIA sounds. I made it back to the video game museum (I'm a member) with various family members and played several games in their arcade. They have some excellent golden era cabs there in nice shape. They also have an Intellivision with an LTO flash cart, so I played a few lives of River Raid. I did the most gaming there on the giant pong setup. It is hooked up to a projector and giant controls.
Skippy B. Coyote
For the final week of 2016 I returned to some old Game Boy and PlayStation favorites, and the misses wrapped up a very longstanding gaming goal of hers. The old favorites were Solar Striker for the Game Boy (which I actually set a new all time personal best high score of 488,900 in), Ms. Pac-Man for the Game Boy Color (which I also set a new personal best score of 113,670 in), and Time Crisis as well as Hot Shots Golf for the PlayStation. The last of which I remarkably managed to convince the misses to play a full 18 holes of with me, and it ended up being a lot more fun than she was anticipating. Much to my astonishment she ended up beating me by 2 points in match play, and I wasn't going easy on her either! I guess the little lady has a previously undiscovered knack for golf games. lol The game I had been meaning to play through all year though was Montezuma's Return for the Game Boy Color, and I am happy to report that it was well worth the wait! Montezuma's Return is an absolutely brilliant Game Boy / Color exclusive sequel to the platforming adventure classic Montezuma's Revenge, and after playing it through from beginning to end I can safely say that it pays perfect homage to the original while still managing to innovate a little bit with a couple new mechanics of it's own. It feels like Montezuma's Revenge through and through (and I mean that in a good way) but the addition of a checkpoint based password save system and a simple temple map make beating it a much more surmountable, and frankly more enjoyable, task. The graphics are lovely as well, with big detailed sprites over intricately drawn 8-bit backgrounds, and the game is no slouch on the music front either. All in all I had real blast playing through Montezuma's Return and would highly recommend it to any fan of the original Montezuma's Revenge! As far as what the misses played this week, it was pretty much just Pac-Man Collection on the 7800 and Tomb Raider III on the PlayStation, and holy cow was there ever a lot of Tomb Raider III! She was bound and determined to wrap this game up and beat it by the end of the year, and when push came to shove she did just that. After doing a marathon play session from 12:00 PM to 9:30 PM on Saturday December 31st, she at long last put the nail in the coffin for this absurdly difficult game and was able to make Tomb Raider III the final game on her list of games beaten in 2016. After she finished it up and recorded her time she went back and added up all the time she had spent playing Tomb Raider III, and it turns out that she had invested a grand total of 3,066 minutes (51 hours 6 minutes) over the course of 7 weeks playing through it, making Tomb Raider III the most time consuming game that she had ever delved into on record. When it was finally over she was thrilled to have beaten it, and said that in spite of the horrendous difficulty and overly dark environments she still had a lot of fun playing through Tomb Raider III and didn't think it was a terrible game; though she was quick to add that she doesn't think she'll want to play it again anytime soon. Well, that about takes care of everything for this week! Later today or tomorrow I'll be going back to add up all of my household's video gaming time from the past year and do a year end wrap up post with the Top 10 Most Played Games and Top 10 Most Played Systems from my household for 2016, but for now that takes care of everything from around here for this week. Until next time, happy New Year and happy gaming to you and yours! Edited January 1, 2017 by Jin

Kurt_Woloch
Here are my times for the shortened week from December 26th through December 31st (would be the same as for the week until today since I didn't play anything today)... Commodore 64: Cosmic Convoy - 87 min. in 2 sessions Crystals of Zong - 32 min. in 3 sessions Gyroscope - 8 min. Gyroscope II - 5 min. Gyroscope Construction Set - 1 min. Gyroscope III - 15 min. Creativision: Blocks - 8 min. Escape - 2 min. PC (non-eligible): Andi-Land - 44 min. I continued to play Crystals of Zong for a bit. As a new game I tried Cosmic Convoy which I've played back in the day. Your job is to protect a convoy on its way to another planet from incoming enemies. However, the steering is pretty jerky and the ships are big, so it's difficult to avoid them but also to hit them since you don't often see them coming in until it's too late. Then I played different variations of Gyroscope, with the versions II and III actually being hacks possibly done with Gyroscope Construction Set, which itself is a joke. It was programmed in one day, and it shows... basically the cursor goes through the whole playfield, and you can either leave the existing graphics untouched or replace the tile it's on by another one be pressing the correct key. In that respect, it's far away from the complexity of Pinball Construction Set. The versions II and III of Gyroscope are just variations in level design and enemy graphics, but they didn't address the actual flaws of the game, which is the imprecise out-of-bounds detection and the flawed physics. Then I played the two homebrews for the Creativision which were released about two months ago, Blocks (a Tetris clone) and Escape (a variation on Escape MPC for the C-64 and Spectrum). Finally, I tried Andi-Land on the PC, which is a small adventure game where the dialog with NPC's is based on AI. I wish you all a Happy New Year (a bit late I know... but I didn't think of doing it yesterday).
+thegoldenband
Here's the summary for the (slightly) shortened Week 53, running from December 26 - 31. Thanks to its over-thousand-minute playtime this week, it takes the #1 spot and yields laurels for the PlayStation as well, while Break Free tops the pre-NES chart. The big news, however, is the number of platforms represented this week: 30, an all-time record! And that's without some of our more frequent customers, like the Sega Master System, and only 2 Atari consoles. Full-year stats coming soon, including some changes in the Top 5!
+Ksarul
The only thing we got to play in my house in the shortened week 53 was on the TI-99/4A (as usual here). +thegoldenband
Aww, heck, I just added in Ksarul's time. It's an easy task to add it, and it beats the heck out of splitting it across the 2016/2017 divide. So, previous post updated. Now, here come the year-end summaries! But before that, let me congratulate Jin on beating Montezuma's Return. That's a very nice port/update and I keep meaning to get back to it -- I really liked the gameplay and stage design.
+thegoldenband
Overall summary for 2016: In 2016, we played 2185 different games on 82 different systems, for a total of 245,717 minutes of gameplay (the equivalent of nearly 171 days). It also represents an increase of 222 games over last year, and 4 more systems than last year as well. Now, here are the top 100 games for 2016. +thegoldenband
Now for the top platforms of 2016 (though the list is all-inclusive, i.e. with all 82 consoles that were played in 2016). This year it's still the Atari in the top position, while the NES makes it back to #2. But the next three spots have completely changed from last year, with a trifecta of PlayStation, Game Boy, and the general "arcade" platform rounding out the top 5. Top consoles/platforms of 2016: 1. +thegoldenband
And finally, we have the honor roll of the top games of all time, including all games with over 1000 minutes logged (and that's getting to be a big club!). These year-end, all-time totals are complete all the way back through the founding of the tracker in 2008. Some reached these heights thanks to one lone gamer, while others saw contributions from many different participants. But all have earned their place here, and none more so than our #1 game! (Will 2017 be the year that the 999,999 mark is finally reached?) We only have one new entry in our all-time Top 10, as Monopoly for Game Boy Color sneaks in at the bottom of that elite group (knocking Pokemon Red down to #11). But we've had some motion within the Top 10 itself, as in the final week of the year, DOS title Silent Hunter deposed longtime high roller Galaxian to take the #3 spot. That makes Silent Hunter only the second computer game to crack the top three (I believe Park Patrol for C64 was #3 in 2009), and the first game on post-crash hardware to do so. Silent Hunter is also one of only 4 games to break the 10,000 minute mark -- and as it approaches 12,000 minutes, it comes within striking distance of #2 game Christmas Carol. In addition, Historyline has risen to #6, passing Dragon Warrior III, which drops to #8. Top games of all time (and members of the 1000-minute club): 1. Kaboom (Atari 2600) - 187555 2. Christmas Carol vs. the Ghost of Christmas Presents (Intellivision) - 12920 3. Silent Hunter (PC (DOS)) - 11586 4. Galaxian (Atari 2600) - 11479 5. Berzerk (Atari 2600) - 7943 6.
