Coming back to my TI!

Thanks Ksarul.

I tried to research the chip and all roads led back to either MSX, Coleco, or TI.

I also have the VGA and audio to HDMI adapter on its way.

This is going to be great!

Not forgetting the Memotech MTX 500/512/RS128 from the UK with the TMS9929A. I have a MTX500 and tried the F18A in place of the TMS9929A and found the only issue was the slight increase in video and audio speed due to the change of 50Hz to 60Hz.

Hey MadDuck, how are you with a soldering iron? Just curious. I've gotten better since I have gotten back into my TI these last few years. I decided that one TI I keep as bone stock, and one is my "modding" TI*. I plan on modding the hell out of my mod TI. Next thing to do is solder the speech module inside the console.

Darryl

* Actually, I have four consoles: a stock black/silver one, a stock beige one, a beige QI with 1981 firmware, and my beige mod TI.

I don't solder anymore.

I checked my oder status and it looks like my F18A is on its way! They are out of stock so I found and purchased one at the perfect time.

I am hyped F18A!

Well I have had mixed luck with most of my SEGA pads. Some stop certain keys from working, etc.

But way back in 2004, I bought a modified Performance brand control pad from CMD (Creative Micro Designs) that was internally modified to not send any info through except for the d-pad and 1 button.

Sorry for being late to reply. The F18A is known to work in these systems:

TI-99/4A Home Computer
ColecoVison Game Console
ColecoVision ADAM Computer
Toshiba HX-10 MSX1 Computer
Toshiba Pasopia-IQ MSX1 Computer
JVC Victor HC-7 MSX1 Computer
Yamaha CX5M MSX1 Computer
SpectraVideo 328 Computer
Tomy Tutor
SEGA SG-1000
SEGA SC-1000II (replaced a TMS9118 VDP)
Telegames Personal Arcade
Powertran Cortex
Memotech 500 and 512
towmater's AppleTi adapter board for Apple ][ and Apple GS computers

These are the systems people have reported back to me, or that I have tested personally. There are also a few home-brew projects using the F18A.

Also, over in the CV subforum member TPR has a link with a lot of screen-shot comparisons of the F18A on different TVs and monitors, with and without VGA to HDMI adapters, etc. It starts around page 4 of the thread, here is a link:

http://atariage.com/forums/topic/237287-why-i-got-back-into-collecting-colecovision/page-4?do=findComment&comment=3329059

It goes on for a page or two about the video options.

"plus a wide variety of various SEGA gamepads."

anyone got any good links on how to go about using sega genesis gamepads on TI? 3 and 6 button

SMS/Mark III/SG-1000 are like Atari VCS save for an extra fire button on pin 9.

Pin SMS Genesis Genesis
                     7 high 7 low
===   ==========    =========   =========
 1 Up Up Up
 2 Down Down Down
 3 Left Left GND
 4 Right Right GND
 5 +5V +5V +5V
 6 I button B button A button
 7 photodiode multiplex multiplex
 8 GND GND GND
9 II button C button Start

SMS/Mark III/SG-1000 is easy: Pins 1-4 are up/down/left/right, pin 5 is +5V, pin 8 is GND, pins 6 and 9 are buttons I and II, and pin 7 is the photodiode of the light gun.

If that looks remarkably like an Atari VCS controller, it is! Signals are active low and should have pullups, though apparently the standard pads assumed the console held the signals high. Obviously the Atari VCS has no II button, though Princess Rescue could use it if you plug in a SMS or Genesis 3 button pad.

The 3 button Genesis pad has more buttons and must multiplex based on pin 7. Keep it high to use the Genesis pad like a SMS and older controller, in which case B is on pin 9 and C is on pin 6. Drop pin 7 and pins 3 and 4 both go low (impossible state for the D-pad, but identifies the controller) and pin 9 has A and 6 has Start. These buttons are active low with pullups.

The 6 button controller ... is crazy. It sets pin 7 low, and then pulses it high twice within 1.1 msec to indicate it wants to read. During this time, the pad acts like a 3 button controller. But when it gets that second clock pulse, it sends back:

  7 1 2 3 4 6 9
=====    ===== ===== ===== ===== ===== =====
Low Up Down Low Low A Start
 : : : : : : :
High Up Down Left Right B C \
Low Up Down Low Low A Start | rising w/in 1.1msec
High Up Down Left Right B C /
Low Low Low Low Low A Start
High X Y Z Mode High High
Low High High High High A Start Be sure D pad goes high
High Up Down Left Right B C
Low Up Down Low Low A Start Low >= 1.8 msec

Basically, you don't want none of that. :D

  • 3 weeks later...

Well all of the cables are in!

I have the F18A installed (piece of cake!)

It is going through the VGA to HDMI adapter that Ω recommended and it makes a beautiful 640 X 480 extra sharp picture.

The HDMI cable is plugged into the HDMI input on my XOBXONE to try to get some good screen captures.

If only this was in stock:

I'd be one happy camper!

Thanks to everybody.
