derFunkenstein
2) It was proven (see reverse engineering analysis posted above) that the released Flashback HD product is using existing GPL emulation software (and not an original creation as initially claimed) without either mentioning the rights granted by GPL to their consumers (as normally requested by GPL terms) OR alternatively getting a proprietary relicensing agreement from the copyright owners of said GPL code (which both Gens and Genesis Plus developers denied having with AtGames or anyone affiliated with them). Instead of making a public statement that more or less denounces 'false accusations from haters' (without addressing the opposed proofs), claims that they got permissions from 'every concerned developers' (which can easily be denied by asking directly copyright owners of found code) then ask people to give them another 'chance', they should have rather acknowledged the problem and saying that they are investigating in intern and will be trying to fix any existing licensing issues. The only thing that was really proven is that the publicly accessible method signatures (symbols) happen to match those of other emulators. There are well over a hundred of them, though, so I believe that those methods were lifted from other emulators. You can call a method with a set of variables and get back the data type you'd expect. There's a difference. In the interest of not going hyperbolic, it's good to let the facts breathe on their own and let people infer what they will. Pretty convincing to me, though. OTOH, if the emulator authors are saying it's their code, I would believe them. Edited April 26, 2018 by derFunkenstein
BillLoguidice
It's not that complicated, really. Anyone is free to criticize any company publicly, but accusations or even assumptions of theft or other untoward actions do cross a line, especially if the accusers don't bother contacting the company. Anyway, at least some initial contact has been established, so whatever issues there may or may not be can start to be sorted out. Flojomojo
Yeah, but NZ is out of the way so all imports are expensive. There are probably some nice VAT and duties to pay, too. This looks like a fun game to try: https://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/compare_countries_result.jsp?country1=United+States&country2=New+Zealand
MantaNZ
Yeah but most stuff isn't THAT expensive. Like the SNES Classic is under US$100 here. Readily available too

Anyway, at least some initial contact has been established, so whatever issues there may or may not be can start to be sorted out. Why should they bother contacting the company? If they're correct, the company didn't bother to contact them to use their work, so why does the company deserve the consideration? The grieved parties have no obligation to follow a course of action that I'm sure the company's PR team (or person) would prefer. If you had something stolen from you, would you contact the thief or take it public about the stolen goods? Even if they had no knowledge, possibly being a contractor's doing, that doesn't matter. In the end a company is responsible for the finished product, it's not the grieved parties responsibility to sort out the who and the why. Case in point, Toyota recalled countless trucks years ago due to faulty frames and premature corrosion. Even though the fault was with Dana Corp (a contractor) and Toyota didn't know they were getting a faulty product from a supplier, the consumer with the faulty truck didn't pay for a frame, they paid for a truck from Toyota. Toyota had to make right on the consumer end, they then later had to recoup damages from Dana, which they did. The product is already finished. If the accusations are unfounded then they've opened themselves up to civil legal action. Edited June 2, 2018 by keepdreamin
Torr
Oh. Nice to know my country is ripping me off yet again. Lol. Not to get Political, but All countries are having trade troubles/costs with the US since someone new became POTUS. It costs $115 Canadian Dollars here; which is equivalent to $150 American Dollars. I certainly wouldn't pay that for something that sounds like THESE things do. Edited June 4, 2018 by Torr
derFunkenstein
Seems like by this time last year, we'd heard about the HD version of the Genesis Flashback. Interested in seeing what the 2018 model has in store. Particularly that SD card slot and emulation fixes.
vacuumnoise
I wonder if the sound is any better? Seems to me to be the biggest issue with the Genny clones... I kind of get a kick out of it thought, I enjoy atonal & cacophonous sounds TBQH

I kind of get a kick out of it thought, I enjoy atonal & cacophonous sounds TBQH The HD version had better sound than the original clones, but there was VERY OBVIOUS frame skipping in videos that went up pre-release. The second wave of reviews said it was better but still present. Sorry, if you can't get a solid 60fps out of your officially-licensed clone box, I don't want it. Period. Torr
Not quite Flashback related, but I just picked up the new Sega Genesis Collection for PS4, and my god it's bad. Sound emulation is.... good. A trained ear will hear the differences, but but otherwise it's good... except when it goes into a Loooong stutter for some reason. And most damning of all, the input lag is horrendous. I can tap the X button 3 times before Axel throws even one punch in SoR2. And when he finally does, he goes "punch,punch... punch" Not even in time with the steady rhythm I tapped. I did however I find a way to reduce the input lag, but it's a pain the ass and CAN'T be done on some games. Big waste of 40 bucks unless they update the emulator it's using with a patch someday. I watched CGQ's stream and was completely unimpressed with what I saw. I feel bad for your lost money there, because I keep getting this feeling that Sega just doesn't care. And that bodes badly for the 2018 Flashback, because AtGames proved in 2017 they have no interest in getting it right on their own. Bill contradicted that in this thread, but the proof is in the product. I guess we'll see.
Jess Ragan
Well, it's a mess, but at least it... saved me forty dollars? =/ I was hoping they'd iron out the flaws in an update, but that's probably never going to happen. At least I hacked my Flashback HD to play Genesis games the way it probably should have right out of the box. Whee.
