Z80?

A Z80 clone. More like a R800, full pipelined and with an arithmetic co-processor. We can get to 7 MIPS now, should be about twice the 68000 performance at the same clock.

UPDATE: Now working on the SDK (software dev kit). All OMNI development will be in C. After discussions with the main game designer, we believe Quest for the Rings should be our 2nd game. Again, the goal is to start working on those games really early next year. I would like to have OMNI in Kickstarter presentable state by mid to late 2022.

Interesting. Will the physical board and pieces of the original Odyssey2 game be transferred to virtual form, so that all aspects of the game will play out on the TV screen? If yes, it would be nice if your version had an alternate mode of play where those who happen to own the Odyssey2 game could use the physical board and pieces, but play the dungeon challenges on the OMNI instead of the Odyssey2 machine.  :)

That is the plan, everything on the TV screen. Ed Averett gave us permission to greatly expand the game, so we plan a sequel, not a remake. Tom (our designer) has some great ideas where we could go with this.

Agreed - great choice Ed.  While I got rid of my Odyssey collection, I kept the 3 master strategy games -- they were just too cool to part with.  There was a 4th one the never got released.  https://www.the-nextlevel.com/odyssey2/strategy/

Due to chip shortage and delays with the ColecoVision side of things, now seems to be the perfect time for OMNI development.
And so we start our first game, now for the actual OMNI chipset. Also looking to finish the controller.

This could be the console that puts the nail in the coffin of my modern gaming.  I haven't bought a PS5 or Xbox Series whatever yet.  I'm already 2 years behind in playing the modern games I want to play, so I'm in no hurry to get one.  I keep getting deeper into the classic gaming and increasingly frustrated at the massive time commitment of modern games.  And now I'm super excited about this console.  If the Omni turns out to be everything I hoped, I will have to get one and with the classic consoles I already play, my time will be stretched too thin if I continue with modern gaming too.  So there's a strong chance that the countdown to the Omni's release is also the countdown to me finishing modern gaming.

Agree 100%. Modern gaming holds no interest for me. This has the potential to bridge the gap.

Yes Omni would pretty much be the end of much of my modern gaming, retro and neo - retro are really where I am most comfortable and want to spend my gaming money.

Opcode, hopefully an you can give us some new screenshots of work in progress screens and hardware along the way, I miss the days of the Oddyssee remade game screenshots and the Metroid Vania Castle Vania game you were working on too.

Over a year and a half since my last post in this thread.  I must be getting more patient. Or running out of hope.  Is the Omni still in the works?

I know Opcode has been doubling down on its support for the CV lately and I wonder if that's a sign the Omni is dead.

Support I was fully on board with until my Phoenix, my only means of playing CV games, had sound glitches on every Opcode game I purchased.  And as there seemed to be zero progress from Collectorvision on updating the firmware, I gave up on the CV and sold my Phoenix.  And as I sold my CV to get a Phoenix, I wasn't going to go back and purchase a CV again.  A system I found very temperamental.

I haven't sold my CV games yet.  I'm still holding out hope that something will come soon that will enable me to play my CV carts.  Either another run of an improved Phoenix, with a guarantee that Opcode games will not have sound glitches.  Or news of the Omni with backwards compatibility.  I'm not even sure if that's a planned feature.  It's been so long since any news.

Anyway, here's hoping but not expecting an Omni update.

Have you heard of the CV-NUC+  ?

I bought one of these fully assembled and I am very happy with it! It is my "daily driver" for my Colecovision system now!

Marlin Bates ( owner of The Brewing Academy )  has been great to deal with. He is currently on vacation, but his shop will re-open next month on August 19, 2024.

Thanks.  I shall consider it. I wonder if it has better compatibility than the Phoenix. I wouldn't like to purchase one only to find the Opcode games still have sound glitches.

Out of curiosity, what do you have against picking up an original ColecoVision?

I had a CV before my Phoenix.  It was a bit temperamental and when I got the Phoenix I sold my CV.  Having since sold the Phoenix which had its own problems, I guess I'm reluctant to do a complete reversal and go back to a CV.  It just seems like a defeat going completely back to square one. I just don't want to do it.

Gotcha. Yeah, old tech can certainly be temperamental with failing capacitors and power supply issues, etc. I'm all about original hardware on my CRT TVs 😎 but certainly to each their own!

@timdu have you found any games that won't work on the CV-NUC+?

I have the AtariMAX Colecovision SD cartridge and I have been able to play and load everything I have tried to run so far on the CV-NUC+. No issues.

For Opcode game cartridges, my collection consists of:

1.GRADIUS

2. DK ARCADE

3. MOON CRESTA

4. KNIGHTMARE

5. AMIDAR

All 5 play fine. No issues so far when playing on the CV-NUC+. Keep in mind I am not the greatest gamer, so I have not gotten far in any of these challenging games.

I have it connected to an older TV that has an S-VIDEO input.

I am happy with the picture quality.

Also I like the fact that the CV-NUC+ has the SGM built-in and I do not need the additional module attached!

While not exactly OMNI, we will have some hardware news later this year. Please stay tuned. :)

Let me guess: A glow-in-the-dark SGM?  :P

Seriously, in terms of hardware, I'm still hoping your Opcode gamepad gets made.

And what's happening with opcodegames.com, by the way? It's been down since forever...
