_The Doctor__
I gives a very clear indication of what the gizmo will do and what it's for... You intuitively know it. a whole new case that looks like something else... no clue... without anything written on it explaining what it is and does... Mystery Box... A cool new case with some hints could be done.
StickJock
I've got one of his miniature 1050 cases. I, too, think it's cool, but i also think that the disk engage lever should be in the closed, not open, position. How can I be reading & writing to the "disk" with the drive open? ? 1

DamnedOne
I was wondering what happened to the SDrive-Max case STLs that were hosted on Thingiverse? These all seem to have vanished?

_The Doctor__
odd that they would disappear from thingverse as well... does thing verse not store them but rather link back to a persons own repository?

SS
I just got this one from "Vintage Computer Center" the other day. I love it and it's a fantastic compliment to the 400.

So, would make sense to print one up myself.

If so, I'd be wondering why the derivative wasn't released?

_The Doctor__
I am confused, someone took and copied the stl files and were selling them for money, so how does taking down the free stl files and forcing folks to buy them from the culprits that did wrong at all help anyone other than the culprits that were behaving badly?

Childish behavior if you ask me. Imagine if I did the same thing and removed all my files from my AtariBits website just because someone was selling and making a tiny bit of money off my designs. Wait a minute that's already happened and someone IS selling products based on my designs Oh yeah I almost forgot, I gave my permission to do that very thing, and promote that idea for anyone that wishes to do the same Bottom line if you don't want someone to sell your stuff, then don't allow people to download your work in the first place. Common sense folks. Edited December 30, 2022 by mytek I took out some colorful words that weren't necessary 3
flashjazzcat
I think it would rather depend on the license under which the STL files were originally released and whether there was a rider encouraging the consumer to have at it and sell the printed parts. I will assume from the fact the author took the designs down that there was no such rider and that this is not what he had in mind, and a 'nonfree' license is thereby implied. Presumably, following the logic of 'if you don't want someone to sell your stuff, then don't allow people to download your work', the fact the U1MB JED file is freely available to users wishing to recover bricked hardware or upgrade their devices, and the fact this enabled the cloning of the U1MB hardware by people lacking the skill or talent to write their own CPLD code (since without the JED, the U1MB is an ornament), means Candle and Lotharek need to take a hard 'L'.

Maybe so, although I gotta say it would likely not be very profitable for others to try to jump in and undersell Lotharek, and it certainly isn't a DIY level project for most. Whereas 3D printers are very prolific and in the hands of soooo many people now days, only requiring the easily shared STL files. And because of that proliferation of users with 3D printers, there's bound to be at least a few individuals that'll try to re-sell the design -- this is human nature. So no matter what stipulations/conditions that are placed on the download by the author, it will ultimately get disseminated in ways beyond one's control. If the creator doesn't want that to happen, then this takes us full circle back to what I stated about not providing it as a freely accessible download in the first place.
flashjazzcat
Yes - I suppose we could blame the manufacturers of cheap 3D printers as well for making the means of duplication so easily accessible to people who haplessly find themselves selling other people's work because they're human beings. Happy New Year, anyway.
