Here are the 2022 Mid-Year Stats, following the previous format. You can find the 2021 stats here.

So far this year, we have played:

  • 1358 games (compared to 1290 games in 2021, 588 in 2020, 1007 in 2019 and 1078 in 2018)
  • 66 systems (compared to 53 systems in 2021, 41 in 2020, 51 in 2019 and 69 in 2018)
  • 129,009 minutes (compared to 117,261 minutes in 2021, 77,535 in 2020, 105,034 in 2019 and 115,238 in 2018)
  • 95 minutes per game (compared to 91 minutes in 2021, 132 in 2020, 104 in 2019 and 107 in 2018)

We're definitely growing again! More systems and more minutes than in the previous four years, and almost as much diversity as in 2018. Each game however is not played for quite as long as before, which explains how we manage to play so many games. The tracker now consists of 10870 entries which means 12.5% of all games have been played this year. The corresponding figures for 2021 were 10072 entries and 12.8% so the tracker has grown by 798 entries or nearly 8% in a year.

Just like last year, Solar Fox is the most played game. In 2021 it was challenged by Suikoden and Suikoden II. This year it is Pokémon Blue and Pokémon Red that are trailing Solar Fox. The evergreen Kaboom! however drops from 4th to 11th place. Last year the cut-off to be on the top 100 list was 198 minutes, this year it has increased to 255 minutes. Only about 10 of 100 games remain from the top 100 list last year.

The following five systems were reported in the first half 2021, but haven't been seen yet this year:

3DO, PC Windows 95/98 (!!!), Philips VG 5000, Neo Geo CD and Emerson Arcadia 2001.

Of course there are many more that weren't played neither in the first half of 2021 or 2022, but it strikes me a bit odd that none of the older Windows games have been logged this year. Perhaps all Windows gamers go for more modern games in the other tracker?

Hell yeah, Slap Fight MD~

Just remembering that it exists makes me want to play the shit out of it again. Everybody needs to play it because it really is that good. It's also only about 10~12 minutes long if you don't die, so it's kind of insane that I've put that much time into it. It is technically a compilation, but I never really felt like tracking the arcade port of Slap Fight and the actual Slap Fight MD separately.

You who are reading this right now - yes, you - go play Slap Fight MD.

There was a big drop off in 2020.  That was the year the pandemic started.  You would think that times would have increased

due to not being able to go anywhere.  ?

I was wondering about that too. If we crunch the numbers a bit more:

Total numbers

2020: 77,535 min on 588 games and 41 systems

2021: 117,261 min (+51% cmp to 2020) on 1290 games (+119%) and 53 systems (+29%)

2022: 129,009 min (+66% cmp to 2020) on 1358 games (+131%) and 66 systems (+61%)

Top 100 List

2020: Between 3106 min (Solar Fox, Atari 2600) and 167 min (Spelunker, NES)

Average number of minutes on Top 100: 522 min.

2021: Between 4431 min (Solar Fox, Atari 2600) and 198 min (Asteroids Deluxe, Arcade)

Average number of minutes on Top 100: 705 min. (+35% cmp to 2020)

2022: Between 5010 min (Solar Fox, Atari 2600) and 255 min (Star Parodier, TG-CD/PC Engine CD)

Average number of minutes on Top 100: 748 min. (+43% cmp to 2020)

The difference still is there, though milder if we only look at the 100 most played games.

Top 100 Pre-NES

2020: Between 3106 min (Solar Fox, Atari 2600) and 66 min (Protector, VIC-20)

Average number of minutes on Pre-NES Top 100: 266 min.

2021: Between 4431 min (Solar Fox, Atari 2600) and 79 min (Sydney Hunter CoD, ColecoVision)

Average number of minutes on Pre-NES Top 100: 280 min. (+5% cmp to 2020)

2022: Between 5010 min (Solar Fox, Atari 2600) and 86 min (Pac-Man, Atari 2600)

Average number of minutes on Pre-NES Top 100: 338 min. (+27% cmp to 2020)

The differences are even smaller, which we can conclude with more games on post-NES systems these days are played for a short amount of time and then dropped. So what we did in 2020 was to focus more on quality, less on quantity?

Top systems

2020: Between 16,576 min (Atari 2600) and 3 min (Fairchild Channel F)

Average number of minutes: 1891 min.

2021: Between 17,492 min (Atari 2600) and 4 min (Emerson Arcadia 2001)

Average number of minutes: 2212 min. (+17% cmp to 2020)

2022: Between 21,872 min (Atari 2600) and 10 min (Commodore 16 & Plus/4)

Average number of minutes: 1954 min. (+3% cmp to 2020)

This says that while the diversity of systems is at a higher rate, it is spread rather evenly on every system.

So yes, there was a drop in 2020 but once the underlying numbers are crunched, it looks a little less dramatic.

For those who are curious, the mid-year stats on the modern tracker have also been posted. Notable is that there was no significant drop in 2020 over there, so it probably means when the pandemic hit, we played fewer of the late 1980's and 1990's shovelware games, but stuck with the real classics as well as the current gaming stuff for modern systems.

Clearly I need to put some more time into the R-Zone. It can hardly just languish behind a glorified floppy drive ?

I'm excited to report that microcomputers are finally coming to the Evercade so by the end of the year I will be logging some C64 scores. My intention of cobbling my CoCo 3 back into usability is still just an intention, but seeing the Color Computers logged so regularly is a good reminder...

I'm responsible for a good chunk of Switch time, lol.  I have a C64 Maxi on my office desk with my work laptop, but I don't have a lot of room for 'real gaming' on it.  I'm hoping when i setup my home office this fall it makes more of an appearance on the tracker.

That being said.. no Classic Time tracked this week for me.  I'm a terrible Classic Gamer!

Got a rare arcade game this time: Air Gallet. I also finally played Batsugun, fortunately on PCB. It's... okay, I guess. Play Slap Fight, Kyuukyoku Tiger, Hishouzame, Out Zone, or V-V instead because those are all way better than Batsugun.

Arcade
1941 Counter Attack (Japan) - 25
1942 - 1
Air Gallet - 20
Batsugun - 40
Daisenpuu - 30
Hishouzame - 20
Out Run - 5
Out Zone - 10
Out Zone (Zero Wing conversion) - 12

About this version of Out Zone: this is an official conversion of a Zero Wing PCB to Out Zone that Toaplan made. The only reason that I'm doing this separately is because it's stupidly difficult. Compared to the regular Out Zone, it's practically a different game. Don't buy this PCB and don't play this version of the game. Get/play the regular Out Zone PCB instead.
Raiden DX - 20
Same! Same! Same! (2P ver) - 60
Slap Fight - 10
Space Harrier - 10
Zero Wing - 4
Zero Wing (2P ver) - 22

G/MD
Slap Fight MD - 14

Dreamcast
Hanagumi Taisen Columns 2 - 54
Sonic Adventure - 81

Neo Geo AES/MVS

Neo Turf Masters - 20

Atari 8-bit:
Kik-Start - 21 min.
Preppie! - 12 min.
Skateboard - 67 min.
Star League Baseball - 49 min.

I'm really starting to like Skateboard in its simplicity, and I reached level 8 twice (last week I was only at level 5). Unfortunately I can't say the same about Star League Baseball. I played a single game, lost 1-41 and it took me almost 50 minutes. I'm not sure I'll try again.

This week I played a lot thanks to having to stay home and recover from COVID:

Alundra for Playstation - 351 minutes

Asteroids for Atari 2600 - 22 minutes

Gex for Playstation - 56 minutes

Pokemon Blue Version for Game Boy - 86 minutes

Pokemon Red Version for Game Boy - 622 minutes

Pokemon Yellow Version for Game Boy - 857 minutes

Super Mario Bros.: Level-Headed v0.3.9 for NES - 95 minutes

Progress:

Alundra - got through the lizard cave

Asteroids - played game 1 difficulty B and rolled the score

Gex - completed the cartoon world

Pokemon Blue - did the trading with Red and got all 150 Pokemon. Then traded with a Mew Machine event cartridge save to get a legit Mew.

Pokemon Red - leveled up the last of my Pokemon until they evolved, did the trading with Blue and got all 150 Pokemon. Then traded with a Mew Machine event cartridge save to get a legit Mew.

Pokemon Yellow - started a new game and made it through Rock Tunnel. Pokedex is at 40.

Super Mario Level Headed - played through 4 games

 Had a little Tron-a-palooza.

Arcade:

Discs of Tron - 65 minutes

half of such:

Galaga - 10 minutes

Galaga '88 - 20 minutes

Tron - 25 minutes

Atari Jaguar:

Rebooteroids - 45 minutes for HSC

Tempest 2000 - 120 minutes for HSC

All Plus mode. Failed to record.

Fairchild Channel F:

Hockey - 10 minutes

Technically mostly the demonstration cart via the multicart, but it's still the same Hockey... isn't it?

Videocart 7: Math Quiz II: Multiplication - 35 minutes

Multiplying fairly large numbers in your head is pretty fun, it turns out. I liked this a lot as a teen and I still do.

Videocart 7: Math Quiz II: Division - 10 minutes

The numbers are much too small for this to be fun. I remembered with terrible clarity how much I felt the same about

LCD/Tabletop:

(Epoch) Radio Shack Astro Thunder - 35 minutes

I don't understand how scoring works, but it's a lot of fun and the soundtrack is hilarious.

This exists under a million titles worldwide: Firefox X-7, Galaga X6, and probably more.

Tiger NiGHTS Into Dreams - 45 minutes

I finally figured out how this works. Video coming soon...

Tomy Tron - 20 minutes

On video this time:

NEC PC Engine:

Galaga '88 - 35 minutes

Got my best score ever! I was not actually recording and I thought I was. Oh well.

Sega Game Gear:

Doraemon: Wakuwaku Pocket Paradise - 45 minutes

The awesome platformer? No. This is the minigame collection, in the proud tradition of the Tant-R series. Some of the minigames are pretty fun, some become trivial once you figure them out. There is a weird amount of casual nudity in it (people taking showers/baths). It's okay. It was among the last games playable by a non-Japanese speaker I didn't have. I'm glad I got it cheap.

For the first time in as long as I can remember, I have no time to report on either the classic or modern trackers this week.  I just wrapped up a long vacation to the UK, and I was just too busy to fit video games into the daily routine.

More to come of course . . .

Pokémon ? Game Boy! With three titles on the overall list of which Yellow is #1 and Red is #2, it isn't surprising that the Game Boy also is the most played system. The numbers are a bit lower on the pre-NES list, but Mega Bug has almost 15 minutes over Solar Fox.

As indicated, Pokémon Red Version (Game Boy) now is the 10th member of the 10000 Minute Club with a total of 10079 minutes. Obviously it is the first Game Boy entry on that exclusive list:
