Round 10 Poll

We'll go for a tournament round to keep it interesting with probably 5 games over a four week period. I've thrown some suggestions below.... feel free to flesh out the options.

Multi-pick polls this season so select all the games you might want to play before clicking on the vote button. Runner-up games go into the next poll. Add your own suggestions to the games list thread.

I only knew of two or three of these Atari 2600 games that have been ported to the Atari home computers.  Maybe this isn't the right thread to ask this question, but are these "true" ports?  By this I mean that most of the code is the same as the Atari 2600 game.  For example, the Atari 8-bit version of the Activision game "Pitfall II" is based on the source code of the Atari 2600 game.  This is unlike "Pitfall II" for the Commodore 64, which is a recreation of the game.  I think I also read once that "River Raid" for the Atari 8-bit is also a true port from the Atari 2600, and is one of the few games that uses an kernel to draw the screen.  I'm in a bit over my head here, so I may be stating some of these "facts" incorrectly, but I'm doing the best that I can here to ask this question correctly.  Basically, I just wonder if these Atari 2600 ports are recreations, that are similar to the original game or if they are exactly the same as the original game.

I think there are threads for some of them on the main forum/programming forum, I guess the ports use the 2600 code as a base then convert the graphics etc, the excellen "Player Missile Podcast" covers a lot of stuff in detail, can't remember if it's mentioned any of these :ponder:

POLL wise it looks like "Summer of Fun" is cruising it, the 5 i've picked are all goodies but any other game suggestions welcome on the theme we can always further extend playtime :P

How does Star League Baseball work in HSC context?

It's always been one of my faves.  In 2006 I hacked just the text so that it was Blue Jays vs Tigers, as well as change the billboard trivia, which I'll attach here.  I think I just used XVI16 to make the changes but it's been so long I don't even remember any more.

(On a related note, one of my bucket list ideas is to somehow get the code for MicroLeague Baseball so I could see how it works, maybe tweak it, and then make something that would scrape baseballreference.com to automate the creation of teams for the GM disk.  I can go on and on about MicroLeague Baseball and how much I played it as a teen, but I won't :) )

I'd love to play this version for nostalgia if we do go summer of fun, but don't want people to freak that I've hacked the game to cheat somehow because my screenshots say TOR vs DET instead of the normal home vs away, so let me know :)

We could certainly play Star League Baseball a couple of different ways.  We could:

a.  Play for most runs scored (standard High Score rules.)

b.  Largest margin of victory vs. the computer.

However, if we play it, we should decide the settings for the game and stick to them.  For example, both teams use the same pitching/batting settings.

I've always wanted to go into the SLB code and mess with the text, myself, but I have less than zero experience in doing such things.  I do remember messing around with the code in Telengard, but that was easy because it was written in BASIC.

I'm not sure what Topper has to do with summer, except he's a turtle and they like summertime?

Some other ideas:

Skateboard: http://www.atarimania.com/game-atari-400-800-xl-xe-skateboard_4687.html

Beach Landing: http://www.atarimania.com/game-atari-400-800-xl-xe-beach-landing_572.html

(perhaps a tad bit too much war like, though the presentation makes it look quite family friendly)

I did enjoy some of the summer-esque games we played last year (Bug Off, Equestrian, Hazard Run, Hover Bovver, Whomper Stomper) but I rather play something different this year. We did try Amphibian but wrote it off quite immediately, perhaps rightfully so.

As for baseball, not really my cup of tea but as long as there are single-off games, I suppose I could learn to play it. However no longer tournament type games, not even in terms of soccer I think I'd like to play it as part of a HSC.

Obviously there's always Epyx' Summer Games but I don't know which of the events are particularly high score worthy. I've only played it on the C64 and found the technical events (pole vault, diving, gymnastics) a bit of hit and miss while the endurance events (100 m dash + relay, swimming + relay) weren't that exciting in the first place. Perhaps the final skeet shooting event on its own could be worthwhile, but then again if you hit all the clay pigeons there would be several players with maximum points.
