KLund1
I found an 800 with an OS upgrade that has no identifying labels. I was hoping one of you out there in the Atari community might have an idea. It appears to very very well made. But hand soldered. It is on a OS/B board. The only text on the small card is copyright 1984 Computer Software Services, Circuit side, Comp Side, NW A All the chips are lacquer painted over. Any thoughts? Thanks PS Oh, The whole computer smells musty, old like, like in a basement that no one goes into. I'm going to tear it completely apart, and wash the plastics. but how to get the smell off the PCB's and keyboard. The keycaps have those hard to find graphics stickers on the faces, so I can't wash it. Again thanks
reifsnyderb
It also has a Fast Chip floating point ROM in it. So, it's two upgrades. I don't know what the daughter board is though.
KLund1
WOW, That is a good upgrade, and unexpected. Thanks for the exceptional fast reply! Anyone else have thoughts on the small pcb?
Rybags
How many positions on the switch? Maybe it's a full replacement OS. Do you have the means to transfer files like SIO2PC or something?
KLund1
The switch has 3 positions. The ROM is soldered to the PCB. I have almost everything from AtariMax to FujiNet Oh, I forgot There are stickers with poke's on them, and other things on the case A very large one says 32767 (isn't this total fre(0) ram with basic installed?) Then smaller stickers Poke 16,64: BRK Poke 53774,112 Random = Peek(53770)
AtariGeezer
The daughter board kooks like "The Impossible", I have one of those too ... Edited October 1, 2022 by AtariGeezer
+Larry
Beat me! Yes, I only remember the Impossible mod for the 800 from CSS. Those are quite rare. AtariGeezer, have you tried very many titles to see how effective it is?

It worked ok, but noticed that some software wouldn't work with it installed. Edited October 1, 2022 by AtariGeezer
+Larry
I've searched a bit for an advertisement for the Impossible (800 version) and found one from Analog #33, Aug '85. Not a great PDF, but legible. Next, I'll look for any added information about the Impossible XL. CSS Ad for Impossible (800).pdf
+slx
So does „The Impossible“ replace copy protection code according to a built-in database? How else could it work without a modified floppy drive?
+Larry
There is more written about how folks think it works in this thread: Also, did you watch the YouTube video? You can get a good idea as to how it works from it.
KLund1
Thanks everyone. After I clean up the system I will give this a try. I read the threads about this. I was wondering what the latest disk version was that would have the most 'library files' in it to be able to 'backup' the 'latest' software.
