Very cool (and difficult) challenge idea! For the sake of clarification, each player can only post one score for the entire round right? As in, no multiple attempts, it's one and done?

You can post multiple times... You just can't fly off in your spaceship and continue to do it another time.

One spaceship rescue... get your bonus points... take pic... post your score

So, this week we have "The worst video game of all time". But is it really that bad ?. In short, no, not even close. It's actually a brave attempt to do something quite innovative for the time, that just doesn't quite work. It's also quite a feat of coding and game design given the timescales to make it.

HSW talks in his book about what he'd have done given a bit more time, and probably his "an extra week" changes would have been enough to make this a pretty good game, although I suspect that the fact that it needs some thought put into it before you can enjoy it means it would still have been heavily criticised and been a realtive flop. In hindsight, Speilberg's comment about "couldn't you have made somethig like pac man" was probably true commercially speaking, and a simple arcade style game would probably have dome much better in  the marketplace.

I enjoyed playing it in mode 3, and was pleased to get ET home for the first time. I have no idea how some people are hitting the scores they have, but I'm pleased to have just got ET home. At some point I'm going to play it on the harder levels and see if I can crack those.

Anyway, given how much has been written about this game over the years there's nothing more useful I can add (and the above was just my mindless musings) so here's a score :

I kind of like the game. I never played this before, because I heard it's terrible... Well, in game 3 it plays like adventure 😅 find the phone pieces, give those little dots to Elliot (@jason: for more bonus points!) before calling the U.f.o.

So I just attempted to play this one a few times and kept falling into a hole repeatedly. Seems pretty annoying.😵

EDIT: Looks like I receive 3 bonus points anyway for being a new player.... SWEET!!!!! :P

For the first time ever I read the manual and now I FINALLY understand how to play E.T.!

And honestly? It's not that bad of a game once you know what you're supposed to do. E.T. is kind of like a really obtuse take on the Adventure formula, and I'm happy to have learned how to play it after all these years :)

Here's a link to the manual for anyone still struggling to figure out how to play this game: https://atariage.com/manual_html_page.php?SoftwareLabelID=157

I remember being immensely frustrated with this game as a kid. I was constantly falling into pits, and the map never made sense to me. I kept trying to figure it out though because at the time we only had maybe a dozen games. As others have mentioned, actually reading the manual definitely helps!

The game actually isn't terrible once you learn how to play it. But if you don't know how to stop the constantly falling back into the pits this game is miserable..... The one drawback I have is there's only one call the spaceship zone and it can be hidden ANYWHERE on the map and if you cannot find it your E.T. will eventually run out of energy. I played a few games lastnight where I had everything I needed, but just couldn't find that white beetle looking icon (the call spaceship zone). 🙄

I do vaguely remember playing this back in the day at my friends house. I cannot recall if we ever beat the game because we probably didn't play easy level 3. So there would have been FBI agents and scientists all over the place which would have made me hate the game as it's hard enough to learn without all those rude PEOPLE!!!! :P
