dogbowl
Cataloging my 2600 collection this evening (thank you Philflound for your guides) and I found this rattling around inside my Adventure. Could this receipt be original to this box? Anyone familiar with Venture or Zayre stores?
Flojomojo
Zayre was a discount department store, like KMart back then or Target today. That’s definitely the receipt for this game, and well preserved. That’s a lot of money for Adventure! 1
+Psionic
I believe he's asking if the two stores were somehow related since the receipt is from Zayre but there's a Venture price sticker on the box. I'm not aware of any connection, so I don't see how that receipt could be original to that copy of the game. Weird.
dogbowl
Right. Someone placed it inside the box .. but I'm not entirely sure this is the actual copy that was purchased. Not sure how a sticker price of $24.99 would get to $22.36 - you do see too many 12% discount sales. Just odd. Awesome to have the receipt though. I've got a few but I believe this is the oldest. Anyone have an Adventure with a Zayre sticker price of $22.36? I'd be interested in a trade! Edited January 7, 2023 by dogbowl

Zayre and Venture were definitely two independent store chains - meaning they didn't share the same parent company.
4ever2600
Original owner may have purchased more than one for birthday gifts for rival siblings, Venture only had one left and had to go across the street to Zayre to purchase the second. In the end, that reciept ended up in that box. Far fetched? Sure, but I could see it happening. Where I lived growing up, most Zayre had a competing Venture literally across the street. Similar to nowadays Walmart and Target.

Living in Chicagoland area, we didn't get either one till a year or two in the NES lifespan.
dogbowl
My favorite are the $25.00 price tags that are scratched out with something like a 2.99 price written underneath. Archeology evidence of the great video game crash!
Pink
Fun fact, Zayre's parent company, Zayre corp, sold their stores to Ames in 1988 then Zayre Corp merged with TJ Maxx's parent company in 1989, and obviously TJ Maxx still exists to this day. I was born in 1992 so I don't really know how I know that 😁 Edited February 9, 2023 by Pink
Crazy Climber
I'm blown away how clean that receipt is being that it's 40+ years old!
Supergun
I still have some that are just as old and also have crystal clear legible text like that. Retailers used better quality paper and ink back in the day. (everything now a days is complete garbage)
