Splitting an image with GIMP

I usually like using ImageMagick command-line tools for slicing and dicing of images, but getting it to preserve the correct indexed PNG format is headache-inducing. Many times though I've wanted to break up a 7800basic font image into individual images, but it seems that GIMP has no easy native way to do this. Just in case it's of use to anyone else, here's a site that explains how this can be done with the help of a couple of GIMP plug-ins:

I'd also be curious to know if anyone has any other tricks for splitting indexed PNG images, or better ways to do it with GIMP.
