PS2 Slim Laser Issue

I think my PS2 slim needs the laser replaced. It loads the PS2 CD games (blue discs) just fine. When using the DVD games, the drive is very noisy and the game doesn't load. It just goes to the browser menu. No disc error or can't read disc message comes up. If you turn the system upside down, the DVD games will load and then you can turn it back to right side up.

 

Replacing the laser seems easy enough on the slim. Hardest part is desoldering the anti-static blob. I have model SCPH-79001. The laser itself is fairly cheap - less than $30 shipped from Amazon.

 

Can anyone confirm replacing the laser is the correct thing to do?

There’s 2 adjustable pots for the laser inside the drive but often times you can just clean the laser lense. If you adjust the pot for the dvd side only turn it up a little at a time. Otherwise you can burn the disk.
