Atarimania has ROM (of '87 version suitable for XEGS) and guide in the atari user review at the bottom. http://www.atarimania.com/game-atari-400-800-xl-xe-rescue-on-fractalus_5983.html to reduce game time - Play Starting on Level 16 and level up 4 at a time or if you are a trainee play on level 1 and level up 1 or 2 at a time Ace Bonus - there is an Ace pilot on each level so bonuses for most rescued total and in a row - you may have to give up looking on some of the higher levels! Time for some serious 8-bit action; one of the best games ever and we need to rescue some downed pilots and shoot some Jaggis If you've not played R.O.F. before (why?!) then you need to know some of the basics so here goes: fly around shoot the Jaggies, land near a downed pilot (<3 on the radar) get enough of these guys return to the mother ship and level up! You need to have the joystick near the keyboard for this one... L and S ystems on/off - when landed, use to allow pilots to approach, or to fry aliens. Also clears enemy "lock on"s. A irlock open/close - to let pilots on-board (wait for them to knock!) B oost - return to the mother ship Left(+)/Right(*) take off / change speed [altirra use ALT and the L/R cursor keys, atari800WInPlus4.0 & altirra ^or*/+] hints: when rescuing fly slowly and start to land and then take off again quickly to get near to a pilot. If you overshoot just spin round as you land and he's usually still in range rescued pilots give you extra energy. ESCape = Pause More tips: In a nutshell [L]and < 3 on the radar; turn [S]ystems off, wait for a knock on the door, open the [A]irlock to let them on board or hit [S]ystems on again to fry our bug eyed friends... quite nerve-wracking when you have fingers poised over A & S keys and one twitch could be bad news It's not too scientific just start to land, see if you're near and if not keep thrusting and landing until you are! EVERYONE WELCOME to play; if you need any help just ask - it's a relatively tricky game to understand the controls but great fun and really worth checking out. Play on any level you like I've been trying to crack the boulders on Jungle Hunt Advanced but still not made it yet. Had 2 pilots to rescue remaining but got killed by alien on my rescue. What do you do when you get the alien? Do you turn your engine on and leave or can you kill it? Figured it out. You have to keep you finger on on engine start. Unfortunately must have shook the system and cart may have lost contact and i lost my game. Luckily the score was still there. Also posting my photo at end of level 18. Key thing to do when you start the level is to take out as many of those turret guns as possible otherwise trying to rescue a pilot with those guns shooting you makes for a quick exit! Once you clear most of them then you can focus on the pilot rescues. The speed at first does feel fast but you get used to flying and navigating the terrain. Also when you find the mothership (usually after about rescuing half/two thirds of the pilots) then you can go there (select and option buttons at same time in the XE version) for repairs mid level sort of like Star Raiders bases though I think it may hurt your bonus Edited September 29, 2023 by AtariSphinx Updated wording 4 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Deteacher Posted September 30, 2023 Share Posted September 30, 2023 It's been awhile, but I finally remembered how this works. LOL! You can't progress past 16 if you haven't saved the required number of pilots. The good news is you can go up to the mother ship, drop off who you have and return to that level for the rest (the number needed doesn't reset.) So, having remembered that, I made it to level 28 (skipping 4 levels at a time from 16.) Managed a score of 112,230! Little tip for you: If the mother ship is waiting for you and you accidentally let an alien in your ship, fire the boosters and return to the mother ship. +therealbountybob Posted October 1, 2023 Author Share Posted October 1, 2023 I did play the 8-bit version Original disk - Level 16 seems ok to start with on PAL at least Level 16 - 72,137 Ace Level 20 - 113,613 no Ace Level 24 - 158,273 Ace Level 28 - 213,308 No Ace and fried one of the good guys Level 32 - 220,746 ran out of juice too soon - need to collect some pilots sooner folks! If ROF goes back to the title screen when you are docked don't panic like trbb as it will still resume your go when you press fire (keeps score). I tried to land where I thought there was something to see, but completely deserted. I shot some of the turrets but that's it. Since many people compare it to Star Raiders, another game I couldn't care less for, perhaps it is self explanatory. Steep learning curve and way too many buttons to push, but I see why it's so highly rated.
