Pitfall II (Pitfall 2) has in-game bugs

So,  I'm teetering on questionable forum posting here,  so please keep me on the right side of things.

 

I have a rom of pitfall II (pitfall 2) that "plays fine" in RetroArch (gearcoleco), but in game,  it seems all the enemies are too high to jump over.

 

Is this some DRM?  Or anti-theft feature?  Or just a game bug?  I can share the SHA1,  but based on what I see in the community this sort of info isn't really shared in forums , etc. Which makes me think there is some reason for that.

 

Any help is appreciated.  And if I've crossed some line, please let me know (prob by way of deleting my post, lol )

The original version.  Its definitely wasn't a jump timing issue. The creatures were all much higher then the character can jump.  Interestingly,  when I just played the game again,  the bug was gone.  i did not activate any alternate mode/difficulty (if possible)
