Welcome to Challenge Week!

Solaris is listed as one of the BEST Games for the Atari 2600. It came out much later in the 2600 life span.  It was not played by most players.

It is a Challenging Game and takes time to learn the 'ins and outs'.

Those who dive deep seem to enjoy it the most.

Enjoy!

I never got a chance to try Solaris until I was about 17, when I'd gotten a decent computer that could handle most modern software properly.  I finally tried Solaris and I was impressed with what I was playing.

This should be fun.

EDIT: I'll get this started!

Do you have to do all 3 things in the same try?  get more than 10k points, beat your opponent and reach Solaris (which I will likely never do)?  Or can you post photos from 3 different tries?

Doesn't have to be on the same post.

You can post a regular score.... which may be different than your 'Reach Solaris' Score.

Which in turn, may beat your opponents' score.

Wow, this is awesome. It's a shame that this came out too late for it to be that well known, because in absolute terms you can make a good argument for this being the best 2600 game of them all. By 2600 standards, it looks absolutely beautiful, and the gameplay is utterly absorbing . . . . . .you really do end up feeling like you're exploring this vast area. It's easy to see why Atari pushed this as part of their "The fun is back" adverts when they relaunched the 2600.

Frankly this game is an astonishing acheievemnt both for the 2600, and to fit this much game into 16k on any machine. Indeed, if I'd seen this game and didn't know what platform it was on, I would have thought it was on the 7800 or one of the 8 bit computers rather than the 2600. I just don't think I'd have belived the 2600 capable of this.

I don't think I'll reach Solaris in the next week, but having played this more "seriously" than previously for the HSC, that's a challenge I'll definitely look to meet in the future. Thanks to @Vocellibringing this to the HSC this week.

Anyway that's enough from me, here's a score :

Yes! I read the manual after trying once and things are a lot more clear now. Not a good for a "pick up and play" :D

I need help, please. I just visited a "federation planet" and now I want to move LEFT or UP, but the game does not allow this move. WHY? The only way I can go is right, from where I came. But I cleared the area to the right - there is nothing for me to do. I'm stuck in a loop...help

I had that EXACT same problem! The only thing I could figure out was blowing up the planet. I don't understand why it happened either.

How can I blow up the planet by myself?

you have to blow up the fuel depot on the planet. The big negative with that is the whole sector will turn into that red screen/reverse controls stuff, which obviously stinks. That was the only workaround I could figure out at the time. Hopefully there's some other solution, but I'm not familiar enough with the game to know for sure!

I tried using the the map posted here in the forums but upon reaching quadrant 7 I got totally lost with no way to move North.  Im not even sure I was in quadrant 7.  The wormhole here only teleports you to the northeast corner with no way to move North.  The maps for this game are more confusing than the game.:dunce:.  It's good though.  Deep exploration and decent gameplay for a 2600 title.
