Stay Frosty 2 - How to throw snowballs

On the level four (If I counted themn correctly) the snowman needs to eat a carrot to throw snowballs. I could not find a way throw snowballs with my CX40+ or CX78+ controllers and I cannot complete the level. Did anyone play Stay Frosty 2 on the 2600+ and found a way to throw snowballs? Do I need special controller for this?

I have this game in stellas stocking, but I don't think i've been good enough to get to level 4. But I'll certainly try it and let you know what I find out.

I have a bunch of different controllers, But if it actually does require a third button that didn't exist on the 2600/7800, And that doesn't work on the twenty six hundred plus, then that is kind of not a good idea, from a control point of view. Breaking the cardinal rule of game design by requiring controllers that are not official...

On the other hand maybe we could just get that controller supported the twenty six hundred plus at some point....

There are a bazillion genesis controllers out there, plus, new compatible controllers can still be bought for $15 quite easily.

It makes sense to me to add the 3 button capability of the genesis controller to the "official" list for the 2600+ or even the vintage 2600 and 7800 consoles as well.

This opens up so many opportunities for new dev going forward and for adding features to existing games...

  • This game,
  • New stuff
  • Defender/Stargate
  • Space games :
    • Fire-Shield-Smart bomb
    • Fire-shield-galaxy map
    • etc...

I'd like to see games that use something like a three button controller plus a paddle in the other port for things like:

  • Speed
  • Inventory
  • etc...

@Ben from Plaion, @CPUWIZ, @PacManPlus, @Thomas Jentzsch, etc... Whaddaya think?

My two cents.

Stay Frosty 2 supports standard 2600 joysticks with a single fire button, as well as two fire buttons on a compatible gamepad (Sega Genesis and Amiga CD32 gamepads are known to work, but not 7800 controllers).

When a single fire button controller is detected Stay Frosty 2 will show a CX40 joystick in the title screen. Joystick-up will be used to throw a snowball:

When a compatible multi-button controller is detected Stay Frosty 2 will show a gamepad in the title screen. Throw snowball is moved from joystick-up to one of the additional fire buttons:

SF2_20131217_RC8_NTSC_1.thumb.png.5c39b70561f304487a5b513d867eea30.png

NOTE: On a real 2600 both fire buttons on a 7800 controller are treated as the same single fire button on a standard 2600 joystick, so cannot be used as a multi-button gamepad. I suspect the 2600+ behaves the same.

If Stay Frosty 2 shows a gamepad you might need to override that. When running Stella on the computer that'd be done by hitting <TAB> to bring up the Options screen:

Clicking on Game Properties...:

image.thumb.png.2f069cca783e22b14682c888feafc38e.png

Selecting the Controllers tab:

image.thumb.png.de7b4a22f5f8d86ef496c721119cfc24.png

Then changing Left port from Auto-detect (or whatever it is) to Joystick:

I don't have a 2600+ so don't know how to get to these settings on it.

And yes, that was level 4.  The status at the bottom will alternate between score:

image.thumb.png.134845f32ecd76243a52140b370fdd96.png

and lives / level #:

image.thumb.png.5b4bbe2b64a6d9c5c6fc907849f467a8.png

Lives/level # will always be shown when starting a new level.

Anytime you score points it will switch back to the score display and reset the display toggle timer, so it's possible to go a while during the level without seeing lives/level #.

Note: If you earned bonus points the Lives/Level # will show very briefly on a new level before switching to the score display when tallying up the bonus points.

Thanks! Well, at the moment there is no access to any settings of Stella in 2600+.
Unfortunately, Stay Frosty 2 always detects Genesis controller even if I have CX-40 connected to 2600+

That is strange. I do hope the firmware devs figure out a fix for that.

They just have to tell Stella to use a joystick. But then Genesis will not work anymore.

IMO this thing desperately needs an UI.

The 2600+ doesn’t support the Genesis controller, so that won’t be an issue I guess.

I seem to recall running into this before...

Yep, was back in 2019 with the RetroN R77:

Turns out that if Stella detects Genesis support in the game's code it will then act as though a Genesis controller is plugged in, even if a multi-button controller is not connected to the system.

I suggested this:

Since the built in ports don't support the gamepads, the detection routine should only return Genesis if it also detects that a USB adapter/controller is plugged in and that it reports multiple fire buttons, otherwise games like SF2 are unplayable by default.

Testing here, it is selecting the CX40. For those who are having issues, are you on the latest firmware?

Can someone please provide the debug info with the latest experimental firmware on a version that is failing.

Thanks a lot,

Chris.

It does if you have a Seagull 7800 adapter by EDLADDIN or something similar. Genesis controller will work with both 2600/7800 games 2 button 7800 and 2600 Omega Race.

Yeah, I think the problem being reported was likely an issue on the older firmware.

Although, I think it is definitely worth adding two button support for 7800 controllers.

Thanks a lot for testing that,

Chris.
