cgfatari79
I can't code I'm just not clever enough but I just have to see this game made for the worlds best 8 bit. Anyone! please get coding you know you want to. Here is a mock outrun screen shot done in a low resolution for most colours.
+FujiSkunk
I doubt you'd get it looking that good, but something akin to the C-64 version with its animation based on custom character sets might be possible.

Perhaps not all the colour but take a look at how chunky the graphics are the Atari must be able to cope with this surely any way anything’s better than the ghastly c64 version may as well not bother if that’s all is possible. +FujiSkunk
Perhaps not all the colour but take a look at how chunky the graphics are the Atari must be able to cope with this surely... I'm talking about more than just the blocky graphics. For example, in your screen shot, the other cars are shown from different angles. That probably wouldn't be possible. The C-64 version, to conserve memory, would only show the backs of the other vehicles, regardless of where they were in relation to your car. ...any way anything’s better than the ghastly c64 version may as well not bother if that’s all is possible. Ever seen Turbo Out Run for the C-64? Better versions certainly are possible, I'm just not betting they would look as good as your screen shot. Allas
Well I can figure that get something like your screen. Not in char mode, because the best trick for the curves are the horizontal scroll. With apropiate use of dynamic DLI can get some colors extra. Atari strong is the processor speed. Examples like ELEKTRAGLIDE and AMERICAN CROSS COUNTRY ROAD RACE are very good. The infamous PITSTOP 2 is very slow, but has nice graphics, and could it support best support of colors with extra objects in screen. andy_bernstein
Ever heard of California Run ? http://www.atarimania.com/detail_soft.php?...&VERSION_ID=859 It's far from being a great game but, very much like Gun Law was intented as a Commando port, California Run seems to have been intended as an Out Run port. Try to build this picture inside G2F without the "Ged" mode and less than 5 changes every 8th scanline incl. PMg-shapes (PM DMA must be off in the game) The screen you'll see then, is the screen the A8 can handle (fast enough).
andy_bernstein
@ Heaven / TQA but this game is absolutly crap... I said "far from great" so in a way we do agree. Rock on !

Heaven/TQA
Andy...i BOUGHT this game from my pocket money... what a crap game... and btw. the outrun screenmockup looks like gr.7 but uses a lot of colours per scanline... emkay... i am not sure if 800 is fast enough to do an outrun like 3d engine + g2f to be honest... for the road you would need at least every 2nd scanline DLIs and if you want to use the Hscrol feature for the curves then how do you want to compensate that with working in g2f? then... please do not under estimate the damned PM data shifting which is a quite huge overhead... for static pictures ok... or just for horizontal games where you don't have y-movement you could prepare the data but for outrun or lotus esprit challenge... and if not you would need to build the road out of chars? well... Heaven/TQA
sack... can you make a better tune than in hard's demo "cool emotion"? coolemot.zip
Wrathchild
Sheddy would be well placed to comment if such an engine is possible?! Would a simple (basic) gr.10 screen suffice? 9 colours and 80 pixels wide would make shifting data a bit quicker (less of it) and if things were fast moving then the lack of detail would not matter so much, although player/missiles could be used to enhance the display. emkay
emkay... i am not sure if 800 is fast enough to do an outrun like 3d engine + g2f to be honest... for the road you would need at least every 2nd scanline DLIs and if you want to use the Hscrol feature for the curves then how do you want to compensate that with working in g2f? Again you're talking about wasting resources.... When using the hscroll, you cannot use Softwaresprites and you have to get back to standard PM usage... which will always result in a "California Run" Game. Especially "Out Run" would "run like hell" on the A8 with approx. 8 colours per scanline, when using the techniques I mentioned above. Btw.: Games like "California Run" can be done in simple ATARI-Basic with some DLIs.
emkay
sack... can you make a better tune than in hard's demo "cool emotion"? If he buys an A8 using TMC ... there is a chance then
Artlover
I liked the C64's Outrun. Well, Turbo Outrun anyways.
Heaven/TQA
emkay... then make a tech demo in turbo basic... how you would do the road with charmode and pm underlays...
Heaven/TQA
and please NOT a G2F static picture... a RUNNING proof of concept demo even if its in turbo basic...
emkay
and please NOT a G2F static picture... a RUNNING proof of concept demo even if its in turbo basic... For what? Analmux already has done an example, and it works fine. But no one does even a "care about" it..... BTW: Did again something that I still have fun with... ... even if RMT still misses essential features.
Allas
I can't figure a car racing game with fonts. Only crappy action come to my mind. Best reference of smooth action are in ELEKTRAGLIDE http://atari.fandal.cz/detail.php?files_id=1833 ROAD RACE http://atari.fandal.cz/detail.php?files_id=1833 The best I've seen in Atari, and use Gr.15, HSCROLL, DLIs and sprites. Both programs are to old, and sprite technique are simple, today it can be do it better. After all, 4 colors are sufficient to construct a colorful screen with apropiatte rastering. emkay
After all, 4 colors are sufficient to construct a colorful screen with apropiatte rastering. So why bothering with "new" games? 98% of them are using 4 colours per scanline already! "Special" games need a "special" view. Without that "view" you could create a completely different game .... or just rename "Elektraglide" to "Out Run XL"
Goochman
Elktra Glide is def based on the Pole Position code - its almost identical with track, stripes, etc... - A decent PP II pot could prob be made
TMR
sack... can you make a better tune than in hard's demo "cool emotion"? If he buys an A8 using TMC ... there is a chance then He already has an A8.
Heaven/TQA
analmux' SMB demo is cool but does not proove how you would use it in turbo outrun like game. and didn't analmux not mention that he will not use g2f ingame for the final game? i would prefer to use PM gfx for the background like IK+ or in alternate reality: the city... but maybe i am still wrong... goochman... what do you mean EG is based on PP?
Goochman
What I meant was EG's track is almost identical to PP - the track, border, lane markers all behave almost identical to PP - unless Ive been smokin something The mountain scroll in the background also is similar. Any programmer crossover on this one?
