Spector
The Nintendo-style joypad that came out in Europe has a sort of mini stick coming out of a d-pad. Is the stick detachable to leave the d-pad on its own?
Mayhem
Yes, the nub screws into the pad base. Not that usable like that though, as there is then (obviously) a hole in the pad making an impression in the middle of your thumb.
Almost Rice
Yes, but I find that it feels better with it on. Without the nub, its feels cheap. Also games like Commando are easier to play with it. I just got this joystick last week. This user has 7800 pads listed once a month.
ubersaurus
Man, I'm just the opposite. I can't play with the thumbstick in-it tends to make my character go in diagonal directions, rather than straight like I'd want them to.
Lord Helmet
To me, the d-pad is a little flat and stiff to be really useful. I used to use my europad more often, until I got a converted nes pad. Much better d-pad on those IMHO.
Spector
You're right about that. As far as d-pads go, the NES standard is the best ever. Did you convert it yourself, or did someone else do it for you?
SHAGOHOD X99
That screw-on/screw-off stick on the CX-78 joypad is still the best thing going for the ProSystem IMO. The original joystick makes me want to vomit, not to mention gave me lots of hand cramps trying to play that way. No the CX-78 isn't the NES gamepad but it works very well. It's well worth the money to get one brand new straight from Best Electronics, then games of Robotron 2084, Commando and Ms. Paman become a cinch. I used the controller I bought as a template. You can also look here for instructions: http://www.atariage.com/2600/archives/nes_...l?SystemID=2600 Here's a picture of the final product (along with my RSI stick): Edited May 19, 2006 by Lord Helmet

There is an updated one on Graham Percy's website (Al should update the on on Atariage in case his site ever goes away) But the one here on atariage is just for the european controllers with the two resistors in the circuit design. The US ones don't have this and he updated it to include both the 004E and the 004 controllers.
