Fire the proton torpedos.....I have always wanted to command that and I have always wanted an awesome Star Trek game but I'm a little afraid to just buy one with out knowing anything about it, especially at $60. Does anyone own this and what did you think. Was it the kind of game that is just a total disappointment or is it a decent game? Even if it is somewhat decent I would probably go for it, I just hate buying a total bomb, it sucks. I know there are several review sites out there but I like to here what you guys think before I trust some total stranger that for all I know could be getting paid by the game company to write a better review. If any of you guys own or have played this game and wouldn't mind talking a few moments to write a little something about it that would be totally cool, Thanks everyone :)

Yes. I bought it.

There are two main questions to ask. Are you a Star Trek fan? Do you like starship porn? If the answer to both is yes, then Star Trek: Legacy will probably be something you like. If the answer to either is no, then you probably won't have the patience to deal with the game's quirks.

And the game has a lot of quirks.

Basically the game is a merging of a flight sim and a RTS. You can control up to 4 starships in your fleet and give then orders to wander around the sector you're in. Or, you can directly control the ships for some slow turn n' burn starship dogfighting action.

One player mode is fairly boring, and the missions are extremely uneven in difficulty. Like most RTS type games, missions revolve around figuring out the "trick" to get past them One player mode is also allegedly short (I haven't finished it yet), and Federation oriented only. When you beat it, the only reason to come back is for Achievements.

The multiplayer mode is good fun and where the game really shines. The bad news is that multiplayer is almost fatally broken. It's really difficult to get a match going. Some find it absolutely impossible. Once a match is going, things are usually fine. It's just a matter of luck if you can get it started or not.

The game has a high learning curve, and the manual lies to you. The controls take some getting used to, and fleet management is difficult, if not overwhelming. There are only four races available: Federation, Klingon, Romulan, and Borg. The Borg are ridiculously overpowered and the poor multiplayer balancing tools only emphasize this.

I highly enjoy the game, but I don't think everyone will. It has some serious flaws that anyone not simply enamored with the concept of the game will not be able to overlook. I definitely suggest a rental before you commit.

I own it and absolutely love it, but this game is very much a person to person basis, and Trek fans are much more forgiving, so I'll lay down some pros and cons from my perspective.

Pros:

--------

- the most gorgeous Star Trek game I've ever seen, I'll go so far as to say one of the most if not the, most gorgeous space game, shadow effects, reflections from weapons fire, ships models, planets and nebulae etc. amazing.

- sound effects are equally as impressive as the graphics, every bit as good as the movies/shows, and all 5 captains have done an excellent job with their voice acting IMO.

- gameplay is a mixture of StarFleet Command III and Star Trek Invasion, works for both pick up and play users and those who want a more tactical approach.

- excellent story that feels like an episode, with plenty of canon knowledge, references to TV show adventures

- multiplayer is fun, single player game is short but sweet, and the skirmish mode allows for plenty of quick play scenarios.

Cons

--------

- control definately has a steep learning curve with so many options and features in gameplay it can be tricky getting used to using a 360 pad for such complex management. (once you've learned it all good though).

- AI can be a bit wonky at times. (or at least so I've heard, I've never had any real probs)

- multiplayer though fun, sometimes can be hard to find a match, and some ships tend to be favored over others and are overused in some cases online.

- only 4 ships in your fleet at a time, maybe not so much of a con but it doesn't feel like a grandscale battle sometimes.

- odd little things like no ramming, no friendly fire, and sometimes the subsystem targeting doesn't work.

Having said that I absolutely love this game and the year long wait for it was well worth it. If your a hardcore Trek fan don't hesitate, buy it. If you like a bit of a challenge and enjoy the Trek ship battles then also buy it. Other people will pipe in and name more pros and cons I'm sure and everyone has an opinion, I've just giving mine. Rent it if your still not sure, but If you like Bridge Commander, Armada, Starfleet Command series or Invasion then chances are you'll enjoy this game. I hope this helps.

I bought it as well, and have to agree with Gabriel's overview. I enjoy the game a lot, but I'm a Star Trek fan - and I couldn't really recommend it to someone who is not.

I finished the single player campaign, and it was a cool experience but short. As mentioned the individual mission difficulty varies wildly, and the game has quirks that should have been worked out before release. The 'Asteroids' mission in particular is extremely annoying due to difficulty and possible bugs depending on how you handle it.

The manual sucks, and the AI often does exactly what you don't want them to do, forcing you to give direct orders to your fleet and/or takeover.

All that aside, the game is mostly great looking and even totally stunning at times. The 'starship porn' is almost all you could ask for, matching and often exceeding the visual presentation of the various original series material. More than a few times I was just stunned by the beautiful deadly ballet of combat. One particular engagement involving DS9 and many, many other warships was just overwhelming in its sheer beauty, chaos and scope :lust:

It's not Starfleet Command, but it often is a decent balance between that complexity and a more immediate style of play. I have been enjoying the skirmish matches since finishing the main campaign, and have no regrets purchasing the game.

What is starship porn? I'm not a fan of Star Trek...but I am a fan of porn.

Do you have a copy of the TNG Technical Manual? (Or if you're old school, the TOS Technical Manual from the 70's?) If not, then you probably wouldn't understand the geeks drooling over the chance to control Akiras, Soverigns, Galaxies, Excelsiors, Constitutions, etc. Star Trek gamers want nothing more than to be immersed in the Trek Universe as if it were a warm blanky. :P

And for the ultimate geek test,

and tell us if you at least chuckled. :D

I got the game for Christmas and I love it. I'm not all that much of a Trek fan actually, but I'm a sucker for starship games, and this is a good one. Many of the problems with AI and control stem from the fact that the manual sucks and does not explain anything. Once you learn how the game really works, it's very intuitive. It also features some of the most memorable, cinematic, near-movie quality space battles I've ever seen. The first time I watched my Sovereign class battleship arc gracefully away from an enemy ship as it went critical in a brilliant flash of flame and light as a dozen other ships spit death at each other... All I could saw was wow. The game is seriously like playing the space battles from the movies.

The online community is a bit better for the game.

The "win farmers" are still around. You can usually spot them pretty easy. They'll be set up in a 4 player free for all room with the battle settings at 75K points or higher, all eras, single ship per team, and they'll be playing Borg. They'll always pick a tactical cube.

But otherwise, the crowd is pretty much devoid of little twerps (although I did have an experience with one guy where he just ran around the board so I couldn't catch him, and he kept on telling me there was no way I'd win, so I should just self-destruct and give him the match). Just watch out for battles with no time limits.

Oh.... So no Borg titties?

Hmmm I didn't chuckle at that video, but that game looked pretty cool. Kinda like a space dog fight. How many folks can play at a time...four?

Hey everyone

Thanks for all the feed back on this one, good and bad :)

It still sounds like something I would be interested in so I'm going to rent it first. It's good to get an opinion before renting though since it sets you back 8 bucks these days...wow, I still can't beleive that.

I think I'll give it a go sometime this week, Thanks everyone :) :) :)

For those interested.

An interview with the original captain and the his work in this game:

I didn't realize the original Enterprise was an option...and the real captain Kirk did the voice? Sweet.

Actually all 5 captains did their character voicework. Bakula, Shatner, Stewart, Brooks and Mulgrew. Adds a whole new dimension to the game.
