Medieval Mayhem

I just got the game today, and already I see three things that inspired me to make my own version:

#1 - The control is way too jittery, especially on the title screen. A change to the joystick would fix this.

#2 - The "paddles" are way too short. I think I'll make them the same length as in Alleyway or Arkanoid.

#3 - Waiting to get to the end. Because the control is way too jittery and the paddles are way too short, I always get my castle hit first, then have to wait for the others to duke it out themselves. If player 1 gets hit first, I think I'd have whoever has the least amount of hits wins, then second-least be second, etc.

But that's not to say that Mr. Spice didn't do a wonderful job on his game. It is wonderful, but difficult. The graphics are amazing on it, and wouldn't be something I could duplicate with bB. I especially like the title screen music, but the title screen itself I found that one little teeny-tiny push of the paddle can send the cursor like three directions up/down. Well, anyway, that's it for now. I'm going to get the ET Book Cart next month. It's a big purchase, but I want every 32k cart so my collection of 32k carts will be complete. This means also having someone put the NTSC conversion of Fatal Run without Thomas Jentsch's name on it onto a cart.

You need new paddles. The game is silky-smooth with a good set.

Also, E.T. Book Cart is no longer in the store. You'll have to pick it up used somewhere.

I plugged in another pair of paddles, and the jittering went away, but still the paddles are too short! Why not make them long and skinny like in Breakout?

I suspect you've never played Warlords before. Take a look at the 2600 version, you'll see short & skinny shields, and the arcade version, which has even smaller shields.

I recommend you drop the Speed option to Slow or Kids to get a better feel for the game.

Just because Warlords has skinny shields doesn't mean Medieval Mayhem had to have them. I tried putting the speed to 'slow' but it didn't slow the game down. I'll try Kid's setting and read the instruction manual.

I suppose, but my goal was to make what I played as a kid, and that didn't include large shields. I could have added an option for "big shields", but that would have required some feedback during development like I got for the "limited catch" option. There are 2 issues I can think of with "big shields": 1) there's no ROM space to hold 2 sets of shield images and 2) larger shields would conflict with the dragon area.

The fireballs start out at speed 1. They increase in speed when they hit a shield and decrease when they hit a brick. There are 7 speeds, the Speed option controls the maximum. Medieval = 7, Fast = 6, Slow = 5 and Kids = 4.

Perhaps the second game installment of MM2 (currently in brainstorming process) can address that.
