Playing Guerilla War (NES)

Hi there!

Another quality production within one of my favorite genres:

Well, at first glance this one looks like any other Commando clone ever. In fact at first I mistakenly thought that this was just part II or III of the (on the NES!) rather lame Ikari Warriors series.

I was in for a big surprise though. It actually rivals even the mighty Jackal! The sonix are good, the art is looking fantastic (at least where it's not flickering :ponder:;)) and showcases some nice FX like rotating the whole screen during the mine level :o

For a war game this also offers some great humor in a lot of spots were you'd least expect it. E.g. some of the enemies are pretending to surrender, hands up and all, but when you come closer it's always a trap. I'd go so far and claim that this one is the root of the Metal Slug series - just take a look at the prisoners to rescue on the screenshot above!

The game offers unlimited continues, so in theory I could've just marched through in a single session tonight. Since I love these kind of games though, I decided to enhance the experience some, by advancing from level to level only when I made it through a stage with at least 4 lifes remaining. Beating only half the stages that way so far, I'm looking forward to enjoy it some more tomorrow ;)

Greetings,

Manuel

This one is in my personal top-5 NES games - I just love it! Much better, as these often are, with two players, but still a lot of fun with one. The variety, the fun weapons, the fast action, destructible environments...just great stuff. I definitely like this more than Jackal, if only for the goofy mine-car scene.

I agree, it's probably as good as this genre gets on an 8-Bit machine. Come to think of it, I don't even remember many on the 16 Bitters. I played Rambo and Mercs on the Genesis, but there should be more, no? ;)

I only managed three more levels in Guerilla War tonight, admittedly because I spent most of the time playing Muramasa on the Wii

Still doing the two city levels and the sewers inbetween was fun, even with the game getting pretty hard along the way.

I picked up Soldiers of Fortune for the Genesis a few years ago after reading a favorable review from the VGC, but I wasn't real impressed - Tommy and I spent an evening blowing through about half of it but I haven't touched it since. Part of it was that the graphics were just impossibly muddy on my CRT; it looked like colored blobs and the text was unreadable. Might be more fun in emulation or on a flat-screen TV.

I can't think of a lot of others; and the reviews database I put together doesn't show many more: http://vgreviews.tommymontgomery.com/?genres=6&viewpoints=3&systems=1&sort=avg.d

For some reason that kind of game just sort of died out.

I had to look it up on google and to my surprise I figured that you're talking about Chaos Engine!

I've no idea about the quality of the Genesis version, but it's one of my favourite Amiga games of all time!

It has an 8.68 average(!) score from 262 registered lemon visitors:

I was actually thinking of it when mentioning Mercs and Rambo, but then thought it was more Gauntlet-esque.

Hm... that list made me remember another one for the Genesis that I loved, albeit it's not in your list and I don't remember the name either. It was scrolling vertically and you controlled a spellcaster. I think it was from the same guys that made Thunderforce and I remember loving the music, one of the best scores on the Genesis ;)

Returning to Guerilla Wars, I just beat it. The end is really hard, especially since some mischievous level design secures that you're losing the flame thrower and you're not getting it back in the last two levels. But finally Che and Fidel made it!

Some future day the "Playing..." series may see another Commando clone in the form of "Victory Road", but first it'll continue with something else.

I think you're thinking of Elemental Master; by TechnoSoft.

I have it on my 2000 as well as my CD32. That version sports the better AGA graphics and a voice over. I never made it to the end, think I'll have to dig it out.

Oha, I didn't even know that the CD32 had an AGA chipset. I always wanted one of those sexy 1200ers back in the day, but ultimately switched to a PC in 1995, abandoning Amigas. So all my real Amiga experience is from the 500 ;)

I think I did beat it, albeit I don't remember it clearly. I loved the dynamic soundtrack of the game that would change its mood during your journey through the levels.

That's it yes!! Way cool game, I need to get me a copy again!
