Tom Jennings, creator of FidoNet, officially releases the FidoNet software this month in 1984. Soon after its release, dozens of BBSs would use it to link message bases and email via late night modem to modem communication.

FidoNet would eventually grow into a worldwide network of BBSs that's still in use today. At its peak, in 1996, FidoNet had approximately 39,000 participating systems worldwide. More information on FidoNet is available here.

AMIS stands for Atari Message Information System. It's one of the earliest bulletin board programs for the Atari (8-bit) computer.

The exact release date of AMIS is unknown, however, the June 1982 issue of Antic Magazine (Volume 1, number 2, page 25) reports that the Michigan Atari Computer Enthusiasts (MACE) have developed a bulletin board program for the Atari (8-bit) computer. Antic also mentions that its staff is helping MACE improve and distribute the BBS program to other Atari Users Groups. The BBS software is unnamed in this issue of Antic, however, it is probably an early version of the AMIS BBS software.

Antic does not mention the BBS again until its May 1983 (volume 2, number 2, page 92) issue. By May 1983, the program is called AMIS and Antic notes that it is the most popular Atari BBS program at that time. It is also a public domain program that was frequently modified. In some cases, it served as the basis of other BBS programs.

Just a reminder for the Atari BBS community zoom chat for Sunday, June 1st 2025 at 3pm Eastern.

For more information and the proposed agenda, go to http://www.ataribbs.com/zoomchat which is also the link to the zoom meeting itself (it will automatically forward from 15 minutes before until four hours after the meeting starts).
Project status (for anyone with an update) ICE-T Version 2.80 released!  New Version! Apparently it is the anniversary of both FidoNet and AMIS! No other real agenda planned.... but our best calls are sometimes when we "wing it". I do have some terminal program demos on deck. And whatever else we find ourselves discussing!

    Hope to see you there!
