XL/XE SRAM or Battery-backed Ramdisk?

Larry

Recommended Posts

I'm looking for a mod for either an XL or (preferably) an XE to add a non-volatile 512 KB or larger ramdisk. Either SRAM or battery-backed, and can co-exist with MyDos. But working under SDX would be OK, too. Are there any? Thanks.

SRAM = Static RAM.

It's still volatile and would have to be battery backed. The main difference is that SRAM doesn't need to be refreshed, so can run faster (not that the Atari will benefit from that).

People have done such mods - although I'm unsure if there's many "official" projects which are readily available.

I think "The Freezer" has battery-backed ability.

Hi

Here is my 1250XLD's :) 512k SRAM upgrade. In this case its not backed by a battery but a 1F goldcap.

Mega-Hz (Wolfram Fischer) makes and sells them, i can PM you his eMail adress.

Its fully assembled and tested, installing is very easy, no upwards-bending of IC pins

nor cutting traces. Fully reversable (and movable to other XL/XE).

Hi Beetle-

Wow! That looks very nice. And already built/reversible/very nice design -- music to my ears!

Hi Beetle, may I ask the purpose of the 1F "goldcap"?

Does this suffice in place of a battery?

If so then how long does it last in this role?

And if not for backup purposes is it there so that the RAMdisk will survive a cold boot?

I've done a couple of projects with SRAM but I've always used an NV memory controller and a battery if I wanted a power backup.
