dinosaur
I just tried to dial up the Prison Board BBS tonight at 300bps (with aSupra 300AT modem!!). I connected, but got the message"Minimum of 1200bps to connect" and was disconnected. Anyone know of a dial up BBS that will connect at 300bps? doctorclu
For anyone who wants to test a 300bps modem,I found a dial-up (dare I say it...Commodore?)BBS. 1-951-242-3593 does 40 or 80 column ASCII Wow.. an actual dialup BBS. Dallas has two more... Marsden and Ecclectic, though not sure if they handle 300 baud. I am testing the Prison Board, I didn't know you had problems with it, just thought I would try 300 baud dialup. Prison Board 972 329 0781 815-820 I was able to go from login to selecting IRC chat at the Atari menu. The trick here is using the "*(first name) (last name) (password)" at the login. Also set menu help level from novice to regular in your settings. 820-827 After selecting IRC most of the time was spent with IRC giving it's login sequence. Sending a sentence can take a minute under the interface we have there and with all the Ansi graphics and how it redraws the characters as you type. Other than that, I was able to carry on a conversation. with JellE, Mopar, and Beetle.
doctorclu
Tried connecting with a 1030 modem and got the "minimum connect rate of 1200 is required during this time". Interesting. I'll see if I can get Ruben to change that. TRying the Family Net BBS 972 496 0650 .. lol no. Ecclectic at (214) 987-2135 was not welcoming to 300 baud. Marsden - (972) 276-6721 this one worked. 9:30-9:42 arrived at main menu. (Hey we are talking about 300 baud here.) The sysop, BillMarsden, is a old Commodore 64 user and fan. The BBS used to be run on a C-64. Sweet. Will work on getting the Prison Board onboard with 300 baud. doctorclu
Since others have brought up their concerns about giving personal information to get access to the Prison Board BBS, I will give the answer Rueben gave to the question on EXACTLY what he was looking for to get access... "I just want a real name, first and last. It is not too much to ask for and I am the one also have trepidation as to what has happened in the past. It is a matter of honor and trust. Yes, I ask for the phone info and address. But I won't get my shorts in a bunch if I see "fake" info like all 2's for the number or some address like Main St USA. I do not even ask for email addresses. For those that are my customers that information is located in my Quick Books Pro and that is for business related mail, like sending the invoice, etc. Everyone who logs in here has an email address. If I login as Joe Shmuck the my email address will be Joe.Shmuck@rdfig.net. So that is how I contact the users here. So tell them please real names, no foul words or play on words. Give info like it asks from where, just say from HOME. Nothing drastic and nothing that will affect the sensibilities of others. I keep a relatively clean and upright board. I have been in BBS'ing since 1987 and running a BBS since 1991. You do not keep running a bbs for that long if you are not an upright straight shooter. I guess you can tell them all that. If they want more assurances they can email me at rdfigsupport@rdfig.net or call my cell at 214-682-1129. Just remind them I run a business to support this bbs and I will not do anything to jeopardize my board or my business. " So hopefully that helps elaeviate some worries. Marius
Bump Hi Doc! Since I restarted my BBS two months ago I haven't seen more than let's say 5 unique visitors. In total I think it were around 30 connects This scene appears to be a death as possible. Strange. I really like this BBS thing. But I guess I'm almost the only one. I can understand people. The internet is much easier to acces and internet can do 'anything'. But people like you and me still use their atari 8bit. Why did modern PC's, MACS and game consoles not win from the atari 8bit, but why did the internet win from the BBS Nostalgia? That is a point I do not understand. Wouldn't it be much more fun to discuss atari related issues on real BBS's? that make a whole new use for Atari 8bits. Boot Bobterm, and connect via APE or another GateWay. In the APE documentation you can read how the R: works and how to connect to BBS's My BBS is here: telnet://ainside.no-ip.org And there is even a status site: http://www.inspiration-soft.com/BBS/
+DarkLord
Well, I understand where you're coming from Marius. We have slow months and good months at my BBS. You're not the only one who likes BBS'ing though! On average, we get around 50 calls a month here. For example, last month was 40 some calls, and the month before that, it was over 70. So hang in there - the Atarians are out there...

Again I'm going to take it down soon. My BBS gets the reputation being gone, and coming back on some frequent base, but I am really disappointed by this. I think I must concentrate on other parts of the atari hobby, and keep the BBS for what it is. Thanks for your support Marius

Thanks for your support Marius Well, I'll be sorry to see it go - just not enough Atari BBS's and SysOps these days. I've got you listed on our other great BBS's section and logoff screen. I'm gonna keep it there. You're most welcome, but I'll take this opportunity to thank you again - don't know if you remember but when I first got my UDS10, you helped me with some questions about it. See ya!

I think users like to know that a BBS will be worth the time. Boot Factory continues on dispite slow calling, and really, should be more promoted. That is perhaps the most steady BBS. Darkforces was a BBS before a internet BBs (I used to call it) and the sysop puts lots of love into the BBS. You put a lot of creativeity into the BBS, which is why I think your BBS has done as well as it has. But the bottom line, sysops need callers. I would LOVE to set up a BBS, but first I want to see people calling BBS's. I want more of a ratio of users to sysops. Maybe the part of the hobby we need you for is for technical support and for calling and posting. That is what I do. There are great BBS's up, they just need our support. doctorclu
Well, checking the BBS's today that we have listed at telnet://rdfig.net (at the main menu hit "X" and then after that "A" for Atari, and you're there at the Atari BBS list.) And here is what I'm finding... Boot Factory is up!! Yahh!!! bfbbs.dtdns.net:23 And it has an interesting website... http://bf.amfband.com/ Inside the 8-Bit Lines 1 and 2... down. Bummer. tcpipexpress.dyndns.org:8888 (& 8889) Mousenet... down. Bummer. Homepage: http://atari-bbs.netjump.de Telnet: atari-bbs.kicks-ass.net:23 Darkforces... down? That's strange. darkforce-bbs.dyndns.org:23 The Grove is up!! Yahhh!!! shadow.skeleton.org:23 Closer to Home ... long gone.. just keep hoping that one will come back. telnet://cth.dtdns.net Link to IRC Atari chat... working! Yahh!!! Link to Telnet Atarinews chat... working... yah!! My link to Thunderdome is currently down, and the same to Cybernoid's BBS. I'm going to do some cleaning for the new year, so I want to find out what is up with the links above that are not working, and if they are not coming back soon, have them removed from the list above. Darkchyld.. what is up with Darkforces? That was the one I wanted to visit the most today. That is my old hang out from when I first got back on the Atari scene.
